    IMDb

    Wikipedia article
Cast (besides the first two, the rest are original actors from LOTR):

    Bilbo - Martin Freeman

    Thorin - Richard Armitage

    Gandalf - Ian McKellen

    Gollum - Andy Serkis

    Frodo - Elijah Wood

    Legolas - Orlando Bloom

    Saruman - Christopher Lee

    Elrond - Hugo Weaving

    Music by Howard Shore

Smaug's role has not been cast yet.

I've been waiting about 8 years for this movie, ever since the credits for Return of the King started rolling. All of Tolkien's works on Middle Earth are my favorite books, so the thought of seeing things like the 'Battle of Five Armies' and 'Riddles in the Dark' on the big screen is just electrifying.

It's been a rocky road, but somehow 90% of the elements that made LOTR such great films are being brought back like filming location, director, music, FX, etc. Innovations include 3D filming and use of animatronics with CGI to give a more realistic feel to the creatures.

Taking a cue from Commodore's excellent thread on a Game of Thrones, I hope to keep this updated for the next 18 months with all the latest developments on the project including pics from the set.

    Background
After the 2007 merger of New Line and Warner Bros., PJ was slated to be exec producer, Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) was brought in as director since PJ didn't want to compete against his masterpieces, and the release was set for winter 2011.

Unfortunately, in the summer of 2010, the project wasn't greenlit due to MGM's financial problems, and del Toro quit.

In fall 2010, PJ was hired as director (as he should've been). But, labor disputes threatened to take production of the movies outside New Zealand. But, the NZ govt intervened and the matter was settled. The start of filming was scheduled for spring of 2011.

I have a feeling the suck factor of this movie compared to LOTR will be in parallel to Star Wars Episode 1,2,3 vs 4,5,6.

I can't think of a single reason to think this way.

    Care to elaborate?

If I trust anyone, it's Peter Jackson. He's already proven himself six times with the theatrical releases of the Rings trilogy and again with the Special Editions of each.

I'd be surprised if he somehow managed to screw this up.

Was Saruman a character in the Hobbit? I don't remember him being in there.

I own all three Rings, love Heavenly Creatures and can say that Peter Jackson is a tad overrated.

Guillermo del Toro would have made a better Hobbit film.

oh yeah, don't forget Saoirse Ronan

This. I also don't remember Frodo or Legolas being characters in the Hobbit.

Saruman: When Gandalf disappears for a large chunk of The Hobbit, he's teaming up with Galadriel, Elrond, and Saruman to kick Sauron out of Dol Goldur. They'll probably show that. Also rumours of Radagast (another Wizard) taking part in that too.

Frodo: Probably just a cameo way of bookending the entire series, seeing as he wasn't born at the time of The Hobbit.

Legolas: Wasn't mentioned in the Hobbit, but is the prince of the forest that the Dwarves get captured in, so it's entirely possible that he was involved.

I really liked Freeman in Hitchhikers Guide, but why not just bring back Ian Holm to play Bilbo. I thought he did a great job in Fellowship of the Ring.

The Hobbit is a prequel to LOTR. Bilbo needs to be a younger man.

    No, just no.

Pan's Labyrinth was good but come on... that's one good movie compared to three EPIC ones.

    Don't even bring up Hellboy..

Wait I don't get it... Frodo is in this movie? Do hobbits age slowly or something?

And Gandalf is already old in this movie too?
