Except he's not a great fastball hitter, Bell was.

Gomez's charts on fangraphs don't show a huge difference on his ability to hit fastballs versus not. I mean if he's not good enough of a player to try in the two hole to see if that can help him sustain success, then he might go down as the dumbest acquisition in Astros history. Batting him 6th surrounded by crap hitters isn't going to help him any.

In the 19 games since he's been back, starting May31, Gomez has quietly been pretty damn good. .279 .343 .459 .802 before tonight.

Between him, Keuchel, Giles, Gregerson... and whoever falls off a cliff next... this front office and managerial staff are going to get quite adept at the whole "reclamation" plan.

Those are very good numbers, if they continue, Astros should re sign him?

Over his last 15 games Gomez has a .939 OPS, scored 11 and drove in 10. His BABIP is also .405, so he's no gonna continue being that good.

However, and more importantly, the reason I feel so much better about him, his K rate is 24.6% over that stretch which is about the number he has in his best seasons. His K rate prior to this stretch was 36.8%.

Now he more or less looks like Carlos Gomez, he still has those bad AB's, and WTF swings, but those have always been a characteristic of his, even at his best.

Nice to see K rate down.

No, but they should extend him a QO and get a draft pick when another team overpays him.

If we can get that out of our 5-6 hole hitter, then we should be extremely happy.

    Springer
    Marwin
    Altuve
    Correa
    Reed
    Gomez
    Rasmus
    Valbuena
    Castro

That isn't a bad line up.
Should tag the Royals up pretty good tonight.

Ecstatic to finally see Gomez hitting the ball. He's also not falling over every AB.

Read somewhere that he's been working with Altuve. I think as Gomez has seen Altuve start hitting bombs as well that it has maybe made him realize he doesn't have to swing as hard as he can at every pitch.

noted. altuve should also be the team's hitting coach.

    Heyman:

Carlos Gomez wouldn’t mind a trade, people around the team say. Not only would the possibility of a qualifying offer be completely removed, but it seems apparent Houston would be fine going with others in the outfield

Would have to be in a deal for another OF though, unless they were willing to try Bregman in LF in the middle of a playoff chase.

No way we could go with Marisnik as an everyday OF

Why is the QO relevant? He can turn it down and be a FA, the same as if the QO wasn't an option at all. And what does he mean in terms of "would be fine going with others"...this year or in the future? It seems clear to me that they would very much prefer Gomez to play most of the time as long as he's here.

Team that signs him gives up a draft pick, it depresses the market.

Interesting and not all that surprising, although I think the market will be pretty heavy with outfielders so it may not make a whole lot of sense. Would be nifty if Luhnow was able to flip Gomez and Fiers for prospects he then uses to go get their replacements/upgrades.

One of two sources: Bregman's agent firing up the free Bregman campaign or Scott Boras trying to salvage value for his client.

The best case scenario remains him playing in Houston, helping the Astros to the playoffs, and making noise in the playoffs.
