Does the WNBA discriminate based on gender?

How about that new womens' football league?

I don't think it is written anywhere that the players in the NFL or NBA HAVE to be male, so there is a chance that a woman could join those leagues. But not so for the women leagues. That is discrimination. If a guy wanted to join and was rebuked, he could sue and have quite a strong case.

Unless it is ruled that women are inferior to men physically, which flies in the face of having women as cops and soldiers.

    What are your opinions?

I think that women's sports are pretty cool, as long as they involve mud or jello...

The point of women's leagues is to give women an outlet they are not able to pursue in men's leagues for whatever reason.

The WNBA, for example, doesn't have to admit men because it has a male equivalent, the NBA. If a player cannot make it in the NBA, he has opportunities in Europe or the CBA.

Same thing goes for the new women's football league.

You can't discriminate if you have as many equal or better opportunities in the same sport. Men clearly have more opportunities in the major sports - baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer - than women.

In that case, the women's leagues are simply leveling the playing field for women.

Agree. Right now its all about opportunity. That makes the women's leagues legitimate under the law.

But if women NEED the WNBA or WNFL to have the opportunity to play, then isn't that admitting women's inferiority to men, physically at least?

Wouldn't that set back feminism just a bit? "I can do everything a man can do."

How about creating a league for people under 5'5". They don't have much opportunity to play pro ball. The Shorty NBA.

Or pro ball for people over 40.

Tell me u guys are joking about WNFL. Now that would be the DUMBEST thing I have ever seen in my life. Who the hell wants to watch a bunch of fat women tackle each other? [IMG] Nothing would be as funny as a women fullback or even a quarterback. Womens sports are lame. I dont know why, but they just are. All except for tennis that is. Womens tennis is just as exiting as mens, if not more.

It is less about phisicality than it is about marketability. The traditional role of women in western society hasn't been one of the athlete until really just the past 30 years.

Now that women as athletes are more accepted, they want and deserve an outlet. If they cannot survive a men's league for phyisical reasons, so what?

I understand your basic reasoning but you are stretching. Men have every conceivable advantage in the world of sports. Women's leagues give them the opportunity to participate and give young girls the chance to have idols like we have them.

It is a good thing for everyone because everyone gets a chance to play.

You know this is a good point. Since a woman basketball player can't dunk a basketball like Vince Carter, that probably means that they should probably just stay in the kitchen, or just deal with always being underpaid and having to worry about a glass ceiling.

I don't know why I haven't thought of this yet.

Women's sports is such a miniscule part of the feminist movement. Women only want to be treated as equals. I'm sure if a woman basketball player could dunk like Carter and had the same publicity as he did, then they'd be asking for that kind of money. Jeff is right, women sports is something that has just started. I predict in 50 years, they will be on the same level as men's sports.

it's all about the ratings. if you don't like em or don't find it interesting, don't watch the women's league (much like what's happening to the wnba now). if you fancy women playing sports, whether they be of inferior or superior quality to men's sports, then watch and support them. liberal capitalism actually works. [IMG]

i personally think that women should develop whatever talents that they have in their own league now so that they can improve and compete on the same level with guys... but that's a belief. my "thoughts" don't really find sweating women playing pickup ball and missing layups with a undersized ball that appealling---just my two cents.

    Thanks for the feedback Jeff.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that women leagues should be abolished or that women should "just stay in the kitchen".

Someone just pointed out these arguments to me, and well, they are pretty hard to refute.

When you get right down to it, it is gender discrimination, even if it is repayment due to past sins(of women not playing sports).

And the very need of these leagues is proof of athletic inferiority. If they need to be seperated in sports to compete, then why not in other jobs that require physicality?

There is some innate hypocrisy there.

In 50 years I think that little will have changed with this issue. But if the women raise their level of play, then they will render all the arguments moot.

Nothing left to do but to wait and see.

Physically, women are not as strong as men. This is a biological fact. They are smaller, have a higher percentage of body fat and a smaller lung capacity. However they do have better balance. Why do we separate men's and women's gymnastics and why do they have different events? The whole world is gender biased...get over it!

you start to present some good points, till you kill it with a blanket statement like this nutcake.

No need to be rude. I'm just trying to learn from different points of view. Nothing wrong with a little healthy debate.
