    in the meeting, https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/immigration-border-children-separation/

President Trump only talked about separating kids from their families in the context of political optics —
not the actual policy, according to a GOP member.

Trump told GOP members, who attended a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill Tuesday, that
the crying babies doesn’t look good politically,” the member said.

This member said the President did not convince him to vote for the leadership bill because he never actually said he supported it.
He just kept saying that he supports both House bills.

“Is that how you come and rally support for a bill?” this member said.
The member continued: “I don’t want to be set up again like I was with the Omnibus.
He said he supported it then threw us all under the bus.”

who knew that immigration policies could be so difficult ?

    • writing an Executive Order that is consititutional
    • healthcare
if only it was as easy as reality TV !

So tell us, without using any narratives, what is the logical argument here? Trump implemented a policy and is blaming the minority party to find a solution.

But the OP's question is will this hurt the GOP? Trump's strategy of keeping everybody in a constant state of outrage is effective. So I'm doubtful this will be the "nail in the coffin" issue. It should be, IMO, but it won't. His supporters will continue to support him.

That said, his list of detractors keeps growing as we are now seeing Repubs now openly taking a stand on this policy. But if Trump reverses course, the GOP troops will get back in line so I doubt this is a big deal. If it happened right before the election, then different story.

The logical argument here is that when people are caught breaking the law, they get prosecuted for breaking the law.....

The DNC saw this as a chance to push what would be a laughable narrative to those who are informed but a powerful emotional narrative to those who are ignorant as hell. The fear of the ignorant masses caused the Republicans to kill the wedge issue by giving illegal immigrants more rights than American citizens....so the DNC will have to find another wedge issue.

Yes it's the DNCs fault the GOP pushed an unpopular policy that nonsociopaths are taken back by. The damn DNC party not in power is ruining everything!

There was nothing wrong with the policy, it's a pretty standard practice but the DNC propaganda managed to convince enough stupid people that wasn't the case. Don't blame anyone else if you happened to be one of those stupid people.

Seeking asylum is not against the law. People fleeing from violence and seeking asylum is perfectly within their rights under existing US law. The US has the right to review such cases and deny/deport the asylum seekers but it's not illegal.

So how were we previously giving illegal immigrants more rights than Americans? Serious question.

That said, at this moment in time, the DNC is winning in the court of public opinion and if you believe it's nothing more than a political strategy, then I'd certainly consult the DNC to continue pushing this one. At a min, the GOP is taking a body blow that is very easy to continue to exploit in the upcoming election. Trump T'd this one up. Let's see if his harsh rhetoric style can get him out unscathed. Maybe. I don't doubt Trump's Teflon.

No one said seeking asylum was against the law and no legitimate asylum seekers are being separated from their families. You clearly don't understand what is being discussed if you are focusing on legitimate asylum seekers, they aren't really part of this.

They weren't really, the only change is that now they are being prosecuted for the crime of illegal entry and before they were ignoring the criminal violation and handling things in civil court....or ignoring it altogether and letting them go free.

Well of course they are winning in the court of public opinion they flooded the airways with emotional propaganda targeting stupid people and that kind of thing is really effective at swaying the ignorant masses.....it doesn't mean they are right for doing it.

Absolutely untrue. Quick search returns article after article that many of these people are seeking asylum because they are afraid of their lives in their home country.

So you said they are being treated better than Americans? How?

#1: Since Trump himself has mastered the art of leveraging emotional propaganda for his gain, you don't garner any sympathy from the left with this line of reasoning.
#2: Calling people stupid as justification of your position is, well, stupid.

Well your "quick search" is pulling up inaccurate propaganda then, legitimate asylum seekers are not having their children separated from them, only those who criminally entered the country illegally. So....basically do some homework and come back.

Homework done. It's impossible to determine if someone has committed a crime without due process. The children are being separated prior to their hearings.

All this is moot now, btw. You are now just being argumentative since your side lost this battle.

    Next.

LOL you understand that when you detain someone that is part of due process right? When you detain someone on charges of committing a crime you don't get to take your kids with you to county.....how is this so hard for people to understand?

I mean I honestly hope that the next DNC propaganda targeting stupid people is better than this.

The problem you have here is you are presuming guilt before properly assessing if they are asylum seekers. If you assume guilt first and strip the kids, you are adding hardship to an already suffering family needlessly. You have to assess the situation and give people the benefit of the doubt before presuming guilt. It's a core value in our society.

Again claiming superiority due to your opinion of other's intellect only reflects poorly on yourself. That approach doesn't help your case.

    <Update> quoted wrong post. Fixed.
