Not saying Jon is worthy, but no way should Abreu be playing the field more than 4x/week. He's older, a poor fielder, and has history of falling off late in the season. He needs more days off and at DH. Not saying he's worthy of DH either, but Jon could easily start more against RHP. Management might be showing a slightly better perspective in this aspect because it seemed Abreu started the first 2 months consecutively last season. This year he sat 4th game in. Diaz should almost never DH. His only hitless game this year happened when he did, plus he sucked there last season and in the minors. Lawd our first base situation is terrible.
Except he doesn't. He has one year - 2022 - where he did that. For his career, August and September are his two best months overall while April is by far his worst. Almost every season of his career, his latter months are his best, both when he was younger and older. Last year, despite playing a ton, June and September were his two best months.
Last season he got a 2-week injury break in August. He posted a 717 OPS in September '21 -- 2020 was a reduced schedule due to covid. Abreu isn't getting any younger. Are you arguing he should play 155 games this season with 150 at 1B, and <5 games at DH?
And he posted a 1.000+ OPS in August. His 2021 was: April: 0.696 May: 1.065 June: 0.572 July: 0.847 August: 1.046 Sept: 0.724 Nothing about that points to tiredness late in the season unless he also got tired in April and June and was magically not tired in in May, July, and August. It's just random monthly inconsistency that people try to cherry pick to justify whatever they want to say (ie, Abreu should play less). I'm saying there's zero evidence Abreu gets worse as the season goes on because he gets tired. Every player is different. I have no idea what gets the best out of Abreu, but made-up narratives that aren't backed up by the evidence are worthless and largely detrimental.
Nah, there's evidence. Some people just choose not to accept it. Bad play in April could mean a guy is a slow starter -- Bregman blushes. Bad play in September for 3 consecutive seasons (sans rest-year) from a 35 y/o COULD indicate age being a factor. But go ahead and completely blow it off. Abreu should play 160 games and never DH !!!
I am batting better than Abreu. I am 0 for 0, No failures in no opportunities while Abreu has 11 failures in 11 opportunities.
His batting stance just doesn't look athletic any more. Was the same with Yuli his last season here . . . I don't know how you are supposed to generate any quickness they way he's standing up there.
Better than Bregman, Chase, Jake and Yordan also. Any time Jon is above the Mendoza line its impressive.
