I'm going to assume that it was a couple of (google the pics) high achieving kids being stupid and not knowing the new meaning of that hand sign, on one of their funnest days of the year.

Conservatives like to interchange fascism and socialism, despite that they are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Goes about like this:
Socialism exists in Europe
Nazi's are from Europe
Nazi's are socialists (or maybe fascists)

 

He was successful in creating a striking image of resistance against racism which is far more important than actually taking the flag away permanently.
