Cruz just won re-election in 2018 (six more years) against an all-out coordinated assault by an all-time record for spending for a Senate race, funded by huge amounts of money from Democrat donor from out state, and also backed by a very aggressive national media campaign coordinated by the Democrat left mass media. If Cruz was done, he would have lost then, to the Democrat left superstar Beto O'Rourke.
Sure, credit to him for winning yada yada. Trump rescued him by generating the bare minimum GOP turnout to win. His internal polls were within the margin of error against Beto because he's not popular, and even TX Republicans are mostly tired of his rhetorical, no-action style. When you compare Cruz's performance to Trump, Abbott, etc., he's badly underperforming. He'll try another run for president in 2020 and won't come close to winning. The GOP would be better served by another Texan running - Abbott.

I guess after seeing trump tweet constant barrage of insane and degrading things and disgrace the office of the presidency, lyin' ted thought he'd try his hand at disgracing the senate. And Texans can now see what cruz does for his senate pay... if only cruz showed as much dedication to defending his wife and father as he does his (ahem) "colleague/friend" in the senate...
