All the high-horse political grandstanding is getting this country no where. We're not yet in dire straights but we're close. Many parts of the world have already fallen off a cliff.

My question is, what's it going to take to pull the country together? Another 9/11? Unemployment hitting 20%? The US bond rating going down to junk level?

Most liberals feel like the White House has compromised far too much (and is already too centrist for their liking anyway), whereas conservatives think that the current administration is so far to the left that the republicans gridlocking congress is the only thing that's saving us from socialism. I'm not sure there is a solution.

Probably something like 9/11- although that was less compromise so much as politicians afraid of looking unpatriotic.

Other than that- I'd say until voters elect more moderates and the Democratic Party grows a spinw we won't see compromise. As much as I don't want Romney as president, I'm scared of having another 4 years of gridlock (Republicans will control Congress)

It will take a force of nature like LBJ or a major war with a clear aggressor against the US (ex: China sinks one of our ships over Taiwan or the Spratly Islands).

I'm pretty sure I would take the status quo over those or any other disaster. I guess I'd just rather hope that people will still watch commercials and want to buy stuff in December, and that banks and consumers will eventually get back to lending and borrowing money they actually have.

It is going to take a very severe defeat for the anti-medicare viciously one percent crowd. That will be a start. Maybe some of the GOP legislators will fear the public more than their wealthy benefactors.I think it will take quite a few yrs of progressive media. Obama has tried over and to compromise but there is little Ground to compromise with the Koch type controllers of the GOP at this point

The compromise didn't last long after 9/11.

We have a significant percentage of people who have been fooled into identifying with the wealthiest and most powerful members of society. These are average Americans who somehow think they're part of the top tiers of the country, when they're clearly not.

Until those fools recognize that they're being **** on every single day, we'll get nowhere.

Not saying i want any of that to happen but that's the point of my question. Status quo is burying our heads in the sand and hoping politicians decide to start cooperating. I think that's futile at best; idiotic at worst.

Like Jack Ryan 747 lands on the capitol building style?

Cuz I don't think they're just going to walk away.
