Isn't it kind of wrong to say "we are doomed"? I think you mean "they are doomed" where "they" are the future generations. And, I think that is the mentality that is going to lead to the day when it's too late to do anything about it. It will just be too late. It's not an emergency situation to the people living now. The emergency situations are being served to future generations...who will look back on times like these with an utter disdain that we didn't do more to deal with it when we could enact meaningful change. But, we are the users...not the preservers...of the Earth. Until that mentality changes, then whatever happens just happens. It's like you have to have world peace before we can save the world...and the Miss USA contestants out there have been clamoring for world peace for years to no avail. Wars pollute and kill. All these deals about emissions cuts by small amounts with exemptions for emerging third world economies. That's not enough. Hell, you got China building entire empty cities with noone living in them and their entire manufacturing infrastructure dumping wastes into their own rivers making them toxic. Think they care about the future? Think our country does? Obama talks a good game on it but where is the green movement? All I hear about is building more coal-based plants and finding more oil to burn. The Earth is turning up the heat. So, build more air conditioners. Like you said, "they" are doomed.

It strikes me as funny when people talk about all life on Earth ending when the Sun burns out or an inevitable asteroid strike hits the planet. It seems to be it is going to come much sooner than that at our own doing. Otherwise, somebody better get some damn big CO2 scrubbers going fast.

Bah...we'll figure it out some day before it's too late.

There are only 2 options for the climate temperature wise... It can get warmer, or colder (earth's wobbly orbit and axial tilt will never let temperatures stay static). If you like lots of humanity around you'd better hope it gets warmer. When it once again gets cold enough to trigger an ice age, growing seasons will shrink or vanish altogether in some areas, and billions will starve.

 

It will get warmer. There will be less food and more droughts. That will be a problem long before the sea level changes start forcing us to move back from the coast.

The increasing population and declining resources will put pressure on human society. We saw what happened when Greece goes awry - it can be a domino effect. Ultimately the middle class gets squeezed.

Think about this. The middle class American lives the same standard of living as they did in the 60's. Despite all the productivity increases and the fact they have two breadwinners, not one.

It use to be that you could raise a family comfortably on a good factory job. No more. You can't buy a house on that, but can you believe people use to???

We live in a country were 40% of the wealth is in the hands of the very few.

Ultimately, the forces and pressures will lead to collapse. This is our golden age. People will look back at us as wasteful, fat, and spoiled. We live like noblemen compared to the history of the planet.

Are our children's children's children doomed? Hardly. Humanity has gone through far far worse. It will be a rough ride - with lots of war and disease...but ultimately, cycles run, and with technology, another golden age will probably come after that.

Sorry to say this, but, the Earth has undergone climate change in the past. And the idea of climate stasis, quite frankly, is just moronic.

 

odd how folks that want us to take aggressive action to combat the as-yet unproven-and-ill-defined "threat of global warming" would countenance no such action to combat the deficit.

 

Seriously. Sample size isn't about the percentage of data points but rather the pure number of data points.
