For everyone else, going to Rice feeds the ego of all the nerds who were picked on in school. MIT grads are less egotistical than Rice grads. It's really sad.

The Rice "prestige" is a manufactured one. There is a not-so-quiet desperation inside the hedges to generate local, east and west coast brand recognition.

Their academic product is average, borderline mediocre; students are poorly prepared and trained for life beyond the hedges.

In his first public comments since his arrest on a drunken-driving charge, Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido admitted this morning that he had “made a mistake.”

“I made a mistake. There’s a price to pay. I’m going to pay it. We’ll go from there,” Garrido told the American-Statesman as he left the office of his lawyer, Roy Minton.

Garrido, the winningest coach in Division I baseball history, remains suspended as the Longhorns’ coach. The suspension, imposed by Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds, is for an indefinite period. The Longhorns’ season begins Feb. 20.
