Stevenson accused of sex with 14-year-old girl

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

FRESNO, Calif. -- Utah Jazz rookie DeShawn Stevenson has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Stevenson, who went from high school directly to the NBA last year, was charged last week in Fresno Superior Court with statutory rape, said Liz Mitchell, chief deputy district attorney.

Stevenson, 20, a Fresno native, faces up to three years in state prison if convicted.

Stevenson is accused of having sex with the girl during a visit to Fresno in the past six weeks, Mitchell said. She didn't have any other details.

The Jazz would not comment and Stevenson's lawyer, Richard Berman, did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press requesting comment.

"I didn't even know he played basketball," Mitchell said. "I have no idea what he was doing in Fresno."

This is the second time Stevenson has run into legal troubles since he was drafted in the first round by Utah last year.

On the night he was drafted, Stevenson was involved in a brawl at a high school all-star basketball game in neighboring Clovis.

Stevenson, who did not play in the game, said he was jumped by five men June 28 after signing autographs. He pleaded innocent to charges of fighting in a public place.

I think its time the NBA start penalizing players for off the court crap. In fairness it should be reserved until after trial, conviction, etc., because these guys are targets.

If I get charged with rape or drug dealing, I would lose my job. If I showed up to work on coke, I would be fired not sent to rehab.

THIS IS whats wrong with the NBA. They can change the 3pt line or zone or whatever, but off the court trouble is the biggest problem of the NBA.

(The job related references are assuming I didn't work for myself)

I don't think the nba's biggest problem is the few players who get in trouble with the law. In my opinion, the nba doesn't have a higher percentage of law breakers than most other fields, but because these guys are in the spotlight, the media covers their troubles.

Thanks for the "innocent until proven guilty" admonition. Questions come to mind:

    1. Did she say she was of age to consent?

    2. Did she have any false ID?

    3. Does she look like she's 17 or older?

    4. Is the age of sexual consent in California 16 or younger?

    5. Are she or her parents angling for a settlement and confidentiality agreement? If she or they bail on the prosecution, it will be a tough case to make.

He is just a kid, and statutory rape is a crime that is sometimes difficult to see as a crime. A 25 year old man and a 12 year old girl is easy. An 18 or 19 year old man and a 14-15 year old girl is not so easy.

Anyone who can't remember a 14 year old girl who was passing as 18 can't remember very well. Some grow up fast and like to date guys over 18.

As a father of 18 and 19 year old boys, I can tell you that I worry about them even being alone with girls under 17, because there is such a presumption of both guilt and criminal intent.

Let's give him a fair hearing before we hang this guy.

I wanted to add a couple more comments that relate to items I've read here so far.

What David Wesley did in racing with Bobbie Phills is much, much worse than either having sex with a willing 14 year old or using cocaine. It's a lot worse than having a rap CD with politically incorrect lyrics.

Hell, not paying child support for your kids is worse, too. We seem to be focused on sex and drugs, instead of on true harm to others or lack of personal responsibility.

Who is more deserving of criminal prosecution, Wesley or Stevenson?

Which is more reprehensible about Kemp, his drug problem or his dropping babies off all over the country?

    Pine,
Are you saying that there is no difference between a 14 and 20 year old?

I have just realized that the stakes are myself
    I have no other
ransom money, nothing to break or barter but my life
my spirit measured out, in bits, spread over
the roulette table, I recoup what I can
nothing else to shove under the nose of the maƮtre de jeu
nothing to thrust out the window, no white flag
this flesh all I have to offer, to make the play with
this immediate head, what it comes up with, my move
as we slither over this go board, stepping always
    (we hope) between the lines

Given the statutory rape laws, it's entirely possible that there was no violence involved in this offense. Now, if you really want to destroy your NBA career and demonstrate the public's moral seriousness, try choking your coach.
