"Twitter Inc urged its more than 330 million users to change their passwords after a glitch caused some of them to be stored in plain text on its internal computer system....

The glitch was related to Twitter's use of a technology known as "hashing" that masks passwords as a user enters them by replacing them with numbers and letters, according to the blog.

A bug caused the passwords to be written on an internal computer log before the hashing process was completed, the blog said."

That doesn't sound like a 'bug' to me. Somebody programmed it to do that..a 'bug' couldn't have created that action. This strikes me as intentional, creating the ability for 'them' to access a user's account at some point if desired. Which, of course, is rife with issues.

    Everyone's thoughts?

If it were intentional on the part of Twitter, why say anything at all?

I have a Twitter account and have a bunch of celebrities I follow. I never look at it.

The funniest thing about Twitter to me is why would anyone follow an average person like me. Secondly I really don't care what these people are randomly thinking during the day.

The only real useful purpose I think it serves is following breaking news

    What's twitter?

OK, seriously, its a good idea to routinely change your passwords for all accounts, especially those connected with social media. Twitter accounts have been hacked often over many years.

I mostly follow interesting people... political reporters and commentators (gee, you think?), local sports team members and front office people, local sports reporters (both pro teams and local HS and AAU/select basketball people), and technology people (analysts, consultants, and other technologists). And fantasy football people... especially now as we approach the season.

Many over-zealous software engineers have a tendency to code their error exception handlers to log damn near everything, including the request payload, whenever an exception (e.g. bug) occurs. And forget to (or never think about) scrub out sensitive data -- such as a user's password -- from the logging routine before the log gets written. They have a mindset of "record as much info as possible" so that debugging is easier.

There's a decent possibility that something along those lines is what happened at Twitter.

Also, the MSN/Reuters article's paraphrasing of "hashing" is incorrect...

We need an innovation that will do away with passwords once and for all.

Like normal news is so glacial?

Twitter is the quickest way for a person to reinforce their tribal bubble and hate on those in other bubbles. It is societal poison.
