On the one hand, I don't doubt that the Ukrainian government would want this guy dead. On the other, this is an extremely sloppy way of killing someone for a government and is more aligned with what you would expect from a terror/insurgenct group (in this case maybe an internal faction or pro-Ukrainan groups). Given that Russia has used similar situations as a pretense for military action (2008 in Georgia, the Chechnya campaign*) I also wouldn't be surprised if we see some sort of Russian military activity there in the coming days. * there's a very interesting book by a dissident journalist who alleges that the bombings in 1999 in Moscow and later attacks in Grozny were false flags by the KGB to help Putin sow up power. Alexander Litvenenko (who was killed in London) wrote it.
To be clear, I don't necessarily "like" that the dude got assassinated. Just like your analysis of a delicate and important (and honestly fascinating) situation in Ukraine.
