was cody carlson a bust? he was a really serviceable backup QB for Moon. not a starter...but i don't know i'd call him a bust. i remember him winning some big games for us when moon was out. klingler and ware were pro busts...but they were both immensely successful on the college level here in houston. buck johnson almost immediately came to mind when i read your thread title..the quest for a 3 went on until we ultimately drafted horry. a really long time.
i was thinking about this last night while at the freaking game. i honestly think i was more disappointed by the 2000 team. that may sound weird...but that team NEVER played well. they were out of it from game 1. and that was the first year of the new ballpark. i was so disappointed after 3 straight playoff appearances at how over they were..so early. also..the 87 'stros were disappointing. the rockets with pippen, barkley and hakeem. but the kings of disappointment?? the houston oilers. seriously, they rewrote the books.
2000 was a pretty disapointing year. Actually they did get off to a great start, well at least the first 2 games. At Pittsburgh - Win 5-2 At Pittsburgh - Win 11-2 then the bottom fell out
he was supposed to be a franchise player...a guy who would bring you rings. ultimately, injury kept that from happening.
#1 = Houston Oilers vs. Buffalo Bills...PERIOD. nothing i can remember felt like more of a "bust" than that.
except maybe the next year when they won 11 straight games, including a big Christmas day game at Candlestick...only to go out with a whimper vs. the Chiefs at home in the playoffs.
I started thinking about this last night, and while they may have played much worse than this years team... this year has to be more dissapointing because there is NO obvious solution, and this was their LAST chance. That 2000 team simply lacked pitching... both as starters and in the bullpen.... and this couldn't have been foreseen because nobody knew just how much of a hitter's park MMP would be (and ex-Astrodome pitchers were doomed no matter what...) But, that 2000 team offered far more optimism than this year's bunch: Their lineup was stacked, as Bagwell and Hidalgo had MVP-type years.... that is no longer a given. Also, younger players like Lance Berkman and Julio Lugo (at the time) showed much progress. We saw glimpses of how effective Dotel could be in the bullpen. Additionally, the farm system was STACKED with players like Wade Miller, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Hernandez all due in the majors within the next year or two. I remember thinking all those things towards the end of the 2000 season, and coupled with a healthy Wagner, I saw no reason why they couldn't compete in 2001 (and alas, they won the division). Now, unfortunately, there is NOTHING on the horizon... not much to think that they can bounce back just by next year. The farm system is all but dead, with only Burke guaranteed a shot at the majors next year. Tavares will need to see time at AAA before he'll be here (hurry up and get on that Drayton), but its not a given that these guys will be all-stars. The rest of the lineup is old, nobody has had a BIG year since Lance in 2002, and Wade and Roy are now miles away from where they were projected to be at the start of 2002. But... they may find a way to suprise just yet (Albert Pujols came out of nowhere... maybe somebody else could do that) ... I just don't have the same optimism now that I did back in 2000.
I remember when Kerry Cash caught that touchdown in the 4th quarter and threw the ball at a Buddy Ryan "46" poster.
