Every time I see a wolverine I wonder how it would fair in a fight against other random animals such as:

    cougar
    wolf
    eagle
    my dog
    jackal
    bobcat
    medium sized male feral hog

I guess it's just the white trash kid in me.

I want to see a honey badger vs wolverine. If you've never heard of a honey badger check out:

I posed this question to our staff wildlife biologist. Her answers:

If both were healthy, cougar would run away before the wolverine, though the cougar might prey on a weak wolverine.
If just wolf vs. wolverine, wolverine... though wolf packs have been known to prey on wolverines
    wolverine
    wolverine
    wolverine
    wolverine
wolverine (If a wolverine can bring down bears and elk, they should have little problems with a hog. Apparently, they like to climb on stuff and then pounce on the backs of larger animals, which they then rip to shreds.)
My biologist didn't know much about African Honey Badgers, but she did say in a fight with a non-Honey badger, it would be no contest in favor of the wolverine.

Ask about a Bear. When I lived in Alaska, we came up on one. He told me that wolverines were the only animal that could take a bear. I always found that to be an odd statement, but he said their quickness and aggressiveness made it hell for the bear to take them.

EDIT: Damn. Should have read the entire post first...

African honey Badger are amazing animals. They are so ferocious that Lions avoid them. Since lions have difficulties killing Honey Badgers (the honey badger has a lot of think skin, so it is difficult for a lion to grap the badger)

Basically they are you African version of a wolverine (just a bit smaller). They are really amazing, and have no fear. They are also very smart.

I agree with rimrocker's post, Although a Wolverine does not take down healthy elk. And definitely not a bear (maybe if it is very weakened). They have the ferocity to try to take a prey from a bear, but not the strength to succeed.

I can see a wolverine driving off a bear, but to kill one or beat one, I find hard to believe. I'm not saying it's never happened, but you put an adult grizzly against pretty much any 4-legged North American animal outside of a polar bear, and I'll bet on the grizzly.

I've watched documentaries on honey badgers and those things are just evil. I've seen them kill 8-10 foot monitor lizards and cobras. Aren't they cousins to wolverines though?

Depends what you mean by cousins, they are both part of the family Mustelidae (weasel family), but Wolverines are part of the gulo genus and the honey badger of the Mellivora genus. Other well known animals part of the Mustelidae are the Otter, other badgers, weasels, minks, ferrets, martens and polecats. So you can classify them as part of the same family

I could see a wolverine dropping down on the back of an old or injured black bear and causing some major damage.

Nah, but I could see a wolverine in a shopping cart rolling downhill taking a 3-legged bear if the bear was asleep.
