For those of you who missed the game, astros vs padres. It was pretty funny. Astros got another ass whippin loss but it was a funny night. I stopped watching the game after the 2 inning cause houston was down by alot. I came back later and I see TIM BOGAR, normally a shortstop, practicing in the bullpen. He comes in the game and pitches one inning and gets all them all out. He was the only astro pitcher to get out Eric owen who was 5-5 before he faced bogar. http://www.mugs.net/bogarpitches/ Look at him warming up. Move the **** away Wagner, BOGAR IS THE NEW CLOSER! ------------------ President of the Moochie Norris FAN CLUB
I saw it on SportsCenter. Why trade for middle relief when u have Bogar. Poor Astros, shows how low they have sunked. ------------------ Now introducing the starting lineup for your Houston Rockets: Starting at Center from Wake Forest - TIM DUNCAN
WOW! Maybe they should use Bogar as a full time reliever. His poor battting average caused him to loose his position as starting Shortstop, but he bats as well as any of the pitchers. He fields so well, it would be a shame to loose him alltogether. ------------------ Stay Cool...
Man, I remember when McLane came to town, hopes were high that he'd build a winner. I haven't followed baseball for at least 6 or 7 years simply because the strikes and ridiculous free agency made me lose interest. Is it really that bad? Or are we just unlucky? Has McLane gone the way of the Clippers organization in getting cheap players as opposed to players that can win? ------------------ Just shut up and post
This thread so brings back the memories of the thread earlier this year when Hunsicker traded away Hampy, and Everett. All my fears about the upcoming season have turned over 3 times. I said that the Astros needed middle relief help. ASAP. Has there been a shorter side to this team? I said that the Everette for Adam Everett deal was a horrible one. That Carl was the Stros best overall player. Last I heard A. Everett was batting something like .000000001 in double A ball. with no power at all. I said that signing Lima might be a problem in the new stadium given the hype about home runs (as they turned out true) in the new stadium, and given that Lima gives up gopher bombs at an alarming rate. That Mike Hampton should of got the moolah, (Ive heard the deal where he wanted to test the FA market, but if the Stros threw him enough money someone tell me how he could of said no) being that he was a serious ground ball pitcher. Im not sure if its all Hunsickers fault. I think that Drayton forced the issue. Got his money flowing in from the new stadium, and wanted to cut payroll. Now look at the team. Its in shambles. The is definately a case where ownership and management royally screwed the fans. If anything, why decrease payroll, when you know your going to have buku bucks rolling in with a new stadium??? How is that commitment to winning? Its not. The Astros have been the whipping boys of just about every bad trade in the last decade. What a shame too. This team isnt even close to being a contender any year soon. I want to thank Rocketman95 who made me believe that the moves this offseason weren't so bad, and gave me hope that the stros would still win this thing this year. Anyone else missing Guitty Johnson Everett Finley Abreu Hampton Gonzalez Lofton Schilling Ausmus Heck even Derek Bell Wheres Casey Candaele, Jose Cruz, Bill Doran, Mike Bass, Dickie Thon, Doug Jones, Phil Garner, Bob Knepper, Mike Scott, and Alan Ashby when you need them Anyone else getting the early 90's attack about the Stros???
Blame it on the Astros GM. He really screwed the team and its fans. I wouldn't doubt it if Bagwell left when his contract is up or if Hunsicker traded him. ------------------ We need some meat in the post!
I really think Bagwell is going to leave. I dont see him staying here anymore. ------------------ President of the Moochie Norris FAN CLUB
DREAMshake, "Wheres Casey Candaele, Jose Cruz, Bill Doran, Mike Bass, Dickie Thon, Doug Jones, Phil Garner, Bob Knepper, Mike Scott, and Alan Ashby when you need them" I agree with just about everything you said, BUT... the list of players you gave in your closing. I'll list them in order of how good they were. 1. Mike Scott - Only "great" player you named 2. Dicke Thon - Could've been great... 20 HRS, .300 AVG, year before he got hit in the eye 3. Bob Knepper - Uh, solid is about as much as you can squeeze outta him, had a couple of good years 4. Mike (maybe KEVIN) Bass - Not a defensive specialist. Could hit for average some years, had little pop 5. Jose Cruz - Lifetime .275 hitter. I loved the guy, but c'mon. 6. Billy Doran - Did he EVER hit over .250 for the Astros??? Great glove, no speed. 7. Doug Jones - Gave up about as many games as he saved, or at least it seemed that way. 8. Phil Garner - Tough guy, played nearly his entire career in Pittsburg, though. 9. Alan Ashby - Never could hit, average defensive catcher. 10. Casey Candaele - Nothing more than a utility player. Now, I'm not saying these dudes sucked, because Cruz was one of my favorite 'Stros, but I realize they all had limited abilities.
Dreamer...Im pretty sure that Jose Cruz was a .300 hitter for his career. I know that he was a .300 hitter for the bulk of his career in Houston at least. And that was when batting .300 meant something. Doran, (Kevin) Bass, Garner and ect. I loved because of the reasons you mentioned. They were limitedly talented players who played hard every night and still brought Houston a division title, and played one Hell of a series with the Mets in 86. I still get choked up over that teams unwillingness to lose that year. Heck the Stros were maybe one Glenn Davis Bomb away from being in the show that year with the Sox. Most of all you had to love their hustle. Doran wasnt all star, but was there a tougher competitor. Knepper had almost a AA arsenal of pitches, but he still squeezed out some fine seasons. Mike Scott was the leagues whipping boy until he found his grove with a dynamic "new" pitch.
Jose Cruz had a lifetime batting average of 284. He also had over 1000 RBI'S and runs scored, and was named to 2 AllStar games. Not a bad career. Bill Doran had a lifetime batting average of 266. He had a nice run for 3-4 years where he averaged about 10 HR's+ 60 RBI's a season. And who said no speed??? He had seasons with 42+31 stolen bases!!! Also finished 11th in the MVP balloting in 1986. As far as Playoff series, the 1980 series between the Stros-Phillies has to be the best ever!!! 4-5 games went extra innings. They've been showing game 5 on Comcast this month, and what a great game it was[especially if ya like the Phillies]. ------------------
I think I favor the 86 series a bit more. That 86 team had maybe two true all Stars. Glenn Davis and Mike Scott. That 14 inning affair had me at the peaks of the Himalaya's and the pits of hell twice. Even though that series only went 6 games, it was the best series Ive ever seen. Joe Carter and the Blue Jays, was a good one, but still wasnt quite as good to me. No one expected the Stros to be in the hunt in 86. The Astros did manage two great seasons in the early 80's. I belive twice being beat by the Phils.
Once the novelty of Enron Field runs out probably by May 2001, and the Astros aren't winning, I expect crowds to be under 30,000. If that doesn't get Drayton's attention then nothing. If we are gonna suck this season, I'd rather see us suck with a home run hitter like Sosa. He's brought attention to the sorry Cubs at the end of the season the last two years. ------------------ It's all good!
