    What we have:
A team with good players, good depth, and heart/toughness

    What's needed:
    - A legit star who can carry the team in stretches. This is easier said than done obviously.

    - A defensive center to lock down the paint and change the defensive mentality of the squad

The Mavs winning actually gives me hope for our Rockets, as strange as that sounds

Sorry, but the Rockets are FAR, FAR away from where the Mavs were.

A player like Nowitzki doesn't come around too often.

those two things are the hardest pieces to get, I actually think a legit defensive 7 footer is more difficult to obtain than a superstar...

Go get Monte Ellis and than Brook Lopez and have Samuel Dalembert back him up.

    Kyle Lowery /Dragic
    Monte Ellis/ Lee
    Tayshaun Prince/ Bud Budinger
    Chuck Hayes/Paterson
    Brook Lopez/ Samuel Dalembert

You can go get a vet like Tayshaun Prince.

I think it says more about the number of stars we need than number of players. I think it's been clear we needed more than one player to contend, but some people thought we needed 3 superstar types, or 2 plus an all-star. That would be a whole lot more difficult to arrange.

What if one person fills both of those holes.

Like that certain player down in Orlando.

Honestly, Martin would be considered a star by today's standard if we could get that one special player. So in reality, we're one special player away. Unfortunately, like durvarsa said, they don't come around that often. Yao was ours...damn injuries!

    Perhaps.
I doubt we will get either of those things, or a player who fits both.
Unless Yao has a miracle and comes back beasting, Kevin Martin becomes a guy who dominates the 4th, or Chuck Hayes grows about five inches taller...we will be average.

Everyone knows this, it's been endlessly discussed, a superstar and a shot blocker, absolutely.

I agree with this sentiment, but it will be near impossible to acquire these guys without losing our depth. We need to use Luis to get the young player we can to grow with the core of Lowry/Lee/Martin/Dragic/Patterson.

We are just good defensive coach, shooting/training staff, center and sf away.
