A heads up you will see more and more negative stories about Mexico for at least two reasons. 1). The Repubs are always on the lookout for a way to have scary sounding ways to get out the vote w. dog whistle racism, so immigration they think is a winner. They can up the scare level by claiming without evidence that penniless immigrants bring most of the fentanyl to the US. So why not declare the Cartels "terrorists and bomb or invade? On race can't be too blatant as their dismissal of the two black TN legislators has not played well.

    2) The second reason has a President AMLO (Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador) who has actually delivered the goods to the Mexican working class. He is a threat to the upper class in Mexico and ALSO THE UPPER CLASS IN THE US--After all why not here as well? His Party Morena has greatly raising the minimum wage in real terms; is rolling out real national healthcare for all; has raised taxes on the wealthy; has expanded free education and old pensions; given free fertilizer and in some cases a minimum wage to peasants etc. This is very popular with the bulk of the Mexican working class. (I challenge anyone who can talk to the Mexican immigrants in Houston, the yardmen, waiters, busboys etc. to check this out.) This high popularity is extremely threatening to the upper class who even with total control of the Mexican media by the rich (even worse than here)can't shake his support. Elected in 2018 his Party is still gaining strength and has been picking up more Governorships. Though the Mexican president is limited to one term it seem very likely his Party Morena will win the Presidency again in 2024.

So you see a the NYT, the Atlantic, the WAPO etc. and as well of course Fox etc. vaguely decrying populism vs democracy when they cannot dispute AMLO clearly won democratically and the people support him. . You would think populism not oligarchy is a threat to democracy.

Say whatever you want about Trumps intelligence but it is clear that the guy has a knack for understanding exactly what the right wants to hear.

His 2024 campaign hasn’t really been a policy fest so for him to already come out with the nugget that he’s wanting to run on invading Mexico to go to war with the Cartels tells you all you need to know about what the right wants to do. Whether it be fantasy or reality. The whole charade that the MAGA base is anti interventionist is nonsense. These are the same people who led the charge to invade Iraq. Do not buy for one second that these people are not dangerous enough to not be a threat to our neighbors.

Mexico is pouring synthetic fentanyl into the USA, and it is through the cartels (which control large parts of Mexico) and poor Mexicans are mules bringing it into the USA.

All of these things are factually true.

AMLO is also trying to overhaul the Instituto Nacional Electoral before the next election, in an attempt to ensure that Morena wins, and "more than three out of every four projects now awarded in no-bid contracts."

There's no way to be a politician in a place like Mexico without being a little dirty yourself and there is a reason for AMLO's popularity among every day people. But at least be honest that some of his moves are anti-democratic.

Trump is a world class salesman. He is on the phone talking to his base all the time. He hears from his base that they would not mind bombing Mexico under some pretext, so ...

All this is doing is bringing Mexico closer to China.

The US represents a major demand for illegal drugs

    Well, maybe.

I know that the AG is going to go after Sinaloa Cartel and some Chinese pharmaceutical companies.....

However the truth is that the CNG cartel is VERY close to not needing anything from the Chinese, they have recruited their own pharmacists from around the world that are very close to being able to being able to produce from the ground to the pill, Fentantyl.

So the Chinese element isn't really going to be important long term.

Still, things are heating up with China - they have decided to sentence an American to death recently which upset the State Department, and the CCP is encouraging it's businesses to operate like Pirates did in the Elizabethan Period.

China is investing heavily into Latin America and expanding their influence in the region.

This is about geopolitics and China getting a foothold with our neighbors. All this GOP rhetoric is giving Mexico reasons to undermine the US.

Mexico is trying to navigate relationships with both the USA and China and that is not going to be easy to do.

There is a real trade imbalance between China and Mexico at this point.

The USA needs to be very careful how it handles Mexico.

The US has discussed being more dependent on Mexico and less on China post COVID....

And the GOP’s escalating rhetoric… saying we need to invade… and this and that… ain’t helping that imbalance.

We should want Mexico within our sphere of influence. The US has been geopolitiking with China’s neighbors and China is trying to do the same.

The culture of public corruption in Latin America runs deep...and I'm not sure how you could ever fix it.

Yes, and basically everywhere (ie Europe and the US and Africa and I assume Asia), but from personal experience it's a whole other level down south...it's the main thing that has held them back economically (that, and exploitation) despite all of their resources and potential.

If we didn’t have so many drug addicts here it would help Mexico’s corruption problem enormously.
