The IRS released guidance on the tax deferral on Friday night – four days before the deferral is supposed to take effect. Tax professionals are skeptical of the guidance and say it places too much liability on the employer. So many things wrong with this - both parties in congress do not support payroll tax reduction - trump can’t get his way so try to do it through an EO - the EO defer payroll taxes to next year; it’s basically a short term 0 interest loan that you must payback - does not help the people that most needed the help (does not have a job and so no payroll taxes) - create an accounting nightmare for all companies, anyone with a payroll from small to giant - liability is on the companies if employee is no longer around to collect double the payroll tax next year - 4 days advance notice Ultimately, this likely mean companies won’t comply and will collect payroll taxes as they have been doing.... which also might be a risk to then depending on how the fed gov react.
Honestly this gets jackasses like Ted Cruz smiling ear to ear. This means that if heaven forbid a Democrat gets elected, they know they can freak out everyone on the deficit, and completely destroy public support for a Democratic administration that actually needs some budget to do some things. The Republican party thinks they are setup well to get right back in power if Trump loses to Biden which is an unfortunate reality.
