The Texans, and seemingly all NFL teams, have the ability to keep players they want to keep.

Signing Mercilus to a big guaranteed deal after his down year would have ben a pretty dumb decision, foresight or not.

This current extension he signed was before his first real productive season so I guess it wasn’t dumb of them then.

No, no it wouldn’t have. I get your thing is to always go contrarian. However if the Texans were confident that Mercilus was going to break out, then they should have extended him when it WOULD HAVE COST LESS, rather than AFTER he has a big season entering free agency. It isn’t a hard concept.

Furthermore the “big deal” would be AFTER he broke out... the deal would likely be less BEFORE he broke out.

Where are you getting this information he would have signed if they agreed not to trade him?

One of many reports that said this

This was before the trade rumors came out and he reportedly refused sign the tender to just get traded to Miami.

2 tackles and 1 sack when he ran QB out of bounds. Sure it's gonna take him time to adjust but he's been a bust so far.

Thats a rumor. What he said is he is a defensive end and didn't want to be tagged as a linebacker

He filed a grievance saying this

Grievance was against the NFL not the Texans. The team doesn't make that distinction, the league does.

There is a big difference between a report and a rumor. If you don't believe the report (from multiple sources) that he was going to report before the trade rumors began, then you might as well don't believe any of the reports.

The NFLPA filed (or was going to file) a grievance on behalf of Clowney. That was on or around July 15, well before the info Nimo posted came out. Here is info from another article dated August 28:

Apparently, edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney was going to play for the Houston Texans under the franchise tag after all. Then that went sideways once Clowney heard he was being shopped in a trade.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Clowney was ready to join the team this week, but then he didn’t once he found out the Texans were trying to trade him. If that’s accurate, that’s quite a misstep for the Houston front office...

Whitney looks like von Miller these first 3 games so it’s all good.

Who cares who it is against. Its worth $2 million is the point and was his OFFICIAL position. If he signs the tag he has to show up and loses the fight

You just have a rumor i have an official grievance that makes financial sense

Yes a grievance was filed but never got reversed. In other words, he signed the tag the Texans. Yes it's all rumors but Breer and Rapoport are pretty highly regarded insiders.

Convenient these rumors come up when there is discontent.

There was no talk of trades until Clowney doesnt show up at camp. Not signing the franchise tag and not showing up is a big distraction. ONE player has not signed a franchise tag and that was Bell's second tag.

There were no rumors before him refusing to sign

So why are you saying he didn't sign the tag (or wouldn't have signed the tag)?

The way its being reported is he signed the tag so the trade could happen and that makes sense.

I believe Seattle is listing him as an end

Right because that's the only way a trade could happen. But it was also widely reported that he was ready to play under the tag in Houston as well.

There really shouldn't be a debate about this.

Clowney was going to sign his tender until the Texans started trying to trade him again.

He smartly refused to sign once it was apparent he could end up on one of the worst teams in the NFL.

The Texans botched it.... we move on.

I wasn't disagreeing with that. I posted in one of the threads shortly after the trade that I think he wanted to be here the whole time but also wanted the absolute most amount of money. Their plan didn't work out like they thought when he found out about the trade that would send him to Miami for Tunsil. He fired his agent, killed the deal by refusing to sign, all bridges burned by both sides, stated his prefer destination and here we are going into week 4. (NFL seasons seem to fly by) Big Booty Bad BoB and crew messed up. Wish they could have got him to sign first then shipped him out for Tunsil

Extending a player coming off a bad or mediocre year is exactly the sort of move you criticize them for... see the Nick Martin thread.

I get that the Texans organization and their moves irks you to no end... but this seems like a bit of a stretch to get hypercritical, but also seems par for the course with those who will continue to steer all narratives towards the negative.

Clowney doesn’t seem worth even the tender.
