I listened to the podcast CJ was on with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder where CJ spoke pretty openly about the chemistry he has with Dalton. I am glad we kept him because of his relationship with CJ
11th highest paid TE is a fair deal for both sides imo. And if it makes CJ happy, it’s a no brainer. Good deal
It's possible the new deal will defer or absorb the $3.375M of dead cap from the void year on Dalton's previous deal. The new deal just might provide the club with a little bit savings on the current cap.
Surprised by the total amount but just like everyone here has said, if CJ is happy, I'm happy. I also get to say Dr Schultz for 3 more years.
I'm far from being knowledgeable on this, but here's a pretty good article explaining the void years: https://sumersports.com/the-zone/void-years-explained/
Pumped for this. Gives us continuity, doesn't break the bank for this year (assuming the void year is eaten), and gives CJ a legitimate weapon that he spent last year cultivating a relationship with. Schultz and Jordan are a very good TE duo.
I think that expired already. The dead cap is set. I could be wrong, but I thought I read there was a deadline to resign players without getting hit with that void year dead cap.
Not in love with hit...but I don't hate it. Since Stroud co-signs, I'm cool with it. Would have loved to see CJ with Fant tho.... IJS. Can take a later round developmental prospect now... Reiman... Sinnott... etc.
I'm glad they brought him back. He was easily the best TE we've had since Owen Daniels. My initial thought on seeing the numbers was that $12MM per year seemed a bit steep, but then learning that makes him the 11th highest paid TE, I'm good with it. He's right around that range so that means they paid market value. Welcome back, Dalton!
Remember...Shultz saved Keenum from throwing a game-ending and probably season-ending pick by wrestling it away in the air from the Titans safety.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/dalton-schultz-25238/market-value/ Looking at these numbers and his average salary ($11.3M) and TE Salary Rank (11); this looks like fair market value for Dalton. I'm happy this one is done, because he and CJ seem to have great chemistry that should only grow over the next few years. Well done, Cas/team!
