Take it with a grain of salt, but WalterFootball apparently heard from its sources that a team flew Bruce Irvin in and guaranteed him he'd be a first round pick. The site believes that it was the Texans, and that even if it wasn't, a trusted source claims the pick will be either an OLB or RT. http://walterfootball.com/draft2012_1.php Surprise! Bruce Irvin in the first round? You might be thinking about e-mailing Woody Paige to tell him that he's right about me being a buffoon, but let me explain first. Michael Lombardi reported that some team flew Irvin to their facility in a helicopter and told him he'd be their first-round pick. I have some reason to believe that the Texans will pick Irvin here based on some other things I've heard today, so I guess I'm taking the bait. What I do know for certain, per trusted sources, is that this pick will not be used on a receiver. It'll be the top rush linebacker or right tackle available on Houston's board. *** OTHER 2012 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: *** 1. Cordy Glenn or Jonathan Martin, G/OT - Cordy Glenn can play right tackle or guard in a zone-blocking scheme. He could be Houston's man if he makes it to No. 26. Martin is also a strong option. 2. Whitney Mercilus, Shea McClellin or Nick Perry, DE/OLB - Here are other options for a rush linebacker.
At first I thought he would be a reach here, but I see a Von Miller minus off the field issues. He can be easily mentored with the class acts in our locker room. I wouldn't mind trading back to the early 2nd round to get him but I'm afraid a team picking after us will get him.
Lance Z also mentioned that he heard this from somewhere earlier this week. If the Texans take Bruce Irvin with the 26th pick they would be fools. If they like him so much then trade down and take him at the beginning of the 2nd. Also, any news that leaks this close to the draft is usually BS.
WR's in the first do have a pretty high bust rate. I don't see any of the guys as can't miss world beaters like Johnson and Green were.
According to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi, West Virginia OLB Bruce Irvin was told by a team in the bottom third of the draft order that he will be picked in the first round. Thesidelineview.com's Lance Zierlein hears the 49ers are the "promise team" for Irvin in the first. It's a bit of surprise that San Francisco would go defense early, but pass rushers carry as much value as any position save quarterback. Per ESPN 710 Seattle's Liz Mathews, the Seahawks have also been interested, though not in the first round after Irvin's March arrest for destruction of property.
i'm fine with no WRs taken in the first or second round, in fact i'd rather them focus on other areas unless they are just super high on the guy. I think a quality WR, or 2, can be had in rounds 3-6.
Actually, with the trend towards passing offenses and rules limiting DBs, WRs have become pretty safe as far as positions go. But the two guys generally associated with the Texans are both a little suspect. Kendall Wright seems a little small to fit into the Texans running scheme. While Stephen Hill may be a little too raw to be much use next year(when we want to contend). So there's good reason why they may not like either of those guys.
Actually it's 36% busts: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...often-do-wide-receviers-bust-in-the-1st-round And looking back over the list, most of the hits were a lot more predictable than any of the guys on this years list. They much more resemble the busts. Maybe it looks so bad because when a WR busts it's supernova obvious, OL maybe it's goes with less press.
I do think WR is not the likely position they take tonight. I get the sense that, like RB, Kubiak believes his system doesn't require a 1st rd talent to succeed. I really wish he'd be more open to a fly route specialist, but that's only my view on it. I will say I'll be annoyed if they go DE/OLB in the first. Interior O-Line depth is my biggest concern outside of WR, and that's not a position you should wait around on in the draft. But who knows, maybe they're targeting smaller types that would fit the ZBS but not go early due to size. Wade Phillips does seem to put almost all his eggs in the pass rushing basket.
People always say this and they always base these statements according to how all the draft guru websites set up their boards. If the Texans have Bruce Irvin as THEIR highest rated guy they think will be at 26 why would they trade down into the second and risk the guy they really want not being there? Just like last year people were going crazy over the JJ Watt pick, not because of the player but more so they thought the Texans should have traded back a few spots to get him because all the draft websites had him going 15-25 range and we took him at 11. That being said, I don't think the Texans will draft a WR in 1st or Bruce Irvin at all. Irvin has had off the field issues and Texans normally stay away from that.
I don't think that's exclusive to RB or WR. Look at his starters against the Ravens last January: other than AJ (who he inherited) and Brown (and, theoretically, Schaub) - not a single one was picked higher than the 3rd round. Seems pretty evident he views QB and LT as prime positions and everything else a component of his system. Further: he's had 10 round 1/2 picks (2 2s were dealt for Schaub) during his tenure here. Of those 10, he's used 8 on defense. Now - that may very well be a component of that side of the ball *not* having a system but insetad clowns running it - but, still... With Wade here, they might be more evenly balanced in their "scheme" approach - but I don't see any indication Kubiak thinks his offensive system needs *any* blue-chippers beyond QB and LT.
I just want to get this day over with... too much overthinking by many including me, for all we know it could be a WR taken first as initially hyped, who knows . . .
No no no, this is one of the days in life to savor. Life is always better in the anticipation than the actual experience. (short of a birth, championship or an orgasm) We will all be grumpy, stumped, second guessers by tomorrow.
If I were charged with picking a team, I'd pick WR first. But I trust these guys to make the right decision in the draft.
