Honestly I thought the dunks were spectacular in the group round (even though the group dunk idea is a little silly IMO). The crowd is absolutely dead though, those were some amazing dunks and they got no reaction whatsoever.
When you never see anything new (besides the props these dudes like to jump over), it's impossible to get excited. 360's and between the legs dunks and stuff like that just isn't exciting anymore. If McLemore hits that 720 he was talking about though...
Unless someone dunks from the halfcourt line and does a gymnastic flip in the process, everybody has seen it all. Yawn is the suffice reaction tonight.
This bull**** about giving them 10 tries is laughable. It should be one dunk and thats it. You lose the crowd already after the 1st try.
I disagree. Group dunks is good, in that it A) allows players to warm-up and gain some confidence and B) gives them a rough estimate of what their body can and can't do that particular night (as nerves is a factor). If if was the "one and done" on tries, then no one would attempt a difficult dunk. This then makes the dunk contest garbage, as everyone will try easy two-handed dunks for fear of messing up.
Peaks and Valleys. Someone will come along and take it to another level. Something very simple they could do is build back story to each dunk, which builds anticipation.
I thought the crowd got decently "hype" towards the end. Although I do not like the new format. Not enough dunks, too short. The fans voting for a champion is a joke as well. Give me 4 or 6 players two dunks each with 5 judges rating them 1-10 old school. Top two face off in the championship.
It needs to be saved from the people that think it needs to be saved. That's why we get these crazy format changes every year. Go back to just dunking and just give more incentive to get into the dunk contest.
I used to think we've seen it all too, until I saw this -- we still have ways to go, folks. Any one of these dunks would light up the dunk contest. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/FqR0_mo7otw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
