 If this has been mention by all means lock the thread, but shouldn't this A-hole getta ring from the Lakers too? Screw Artest, Kobe & the Laker's goose was cooked until they flat out GAVE Pau Gasol to LA. The killing part is HE STILL HAS A JOB AND IS UP FOR AN EXTENSION!!!!!! Honestly I love Morey but he could be a GM a million years and never pull off a MORE lopsided deal than that was for the Lakers!

NBA honestly seems more of a Rich getting Richer kinda sport despite a "Salary Cap" . Look at teams that just load up on talent and stay there for a long time . Of course you have luck to draft some great players and get some pieces through Free agency. Knicks spend money like they print their money , but horrible coaching , free agency decisions , bad drafting has led them to this point . NYC 's basketball team should be contending along with L.A , Chicago and Houston and other large cities in the country.

The deciding factor is team "effective" payroll:

    1. LA Lakers = $91,377,313
    2. Boston Celtics= $87,054,429

    5. Cleveland Cavaliers = $84,453,809
    6. Orlando Magic = $82,132,126

    15. Houston Rockets= $69,266,732 - Yao' $17M

Clearly, to win a championship, you have to overpay talents.

The Les-Morey way will be mediocre forever.

typical myopic Laker hater, spinning lies.

    Grizz got
    • salary relief (from Kwame's expired contract),
    • a young center who avg in double figure
    • a young Crittenton, whom the LAker had drafted in round 1, whom Grizz latere traded
    • 2 future 1st round, one turned out to be OJ Mayo
effectively, in addition to ridding Gasol's large salary, Grizz got a dependable staring center now age 25) and a promising SG (now age 22) on verge of stardom

I believe this thread should be about Jerry West. And shout outs to Kevin McHale in helping his former team, I wonder when Bird is going to ship Danny Granger to the Celtics for Ray Allen? So we can have another year of Celtics/Lakers.

Chris Wallace should have 2 rings from the Lakers. Ray Allen might deserve one too.

    LOLwut?

*A young center who averaged a double double outside the NBA. You can't say at the whether Marc would be a good player or not. After all, if the Lakers knew he would be this good don't you think they would have traded Bynum instead?
*Since when did the Lakers have a top 3 pick to get Mayo? Get your facts straight, Mayo was traded from Minny who swapped Love and fillers for him.

In short, this is what the Grizz got from the Lakers:
    *An unknown, unproven C
    * Javaris Crittenton (traded for a 2nd round pick I think)
    *Kwame Brown
    *low first round pick

So an expiring contract, an unknown Euroball player like Pekovic or Splitter, a 2nd round pick and a low first round pick is all the Grizz got for one of the best big men in the league today.

Compare it to what Minny got from the Celts for KG:
    *Minny's own lottery pick (Mayo)
    *Al Jefferson
    *Sebastian Telfair
*Expiring contract (in the form of Theo Ratliffe, still 2x the player Kwame Brown is)
    *Gerald Green
    *1st round draft pick
    *$$$
    *Ryan Gomes

Put down the Laker glasses dude. The Gasol trade was a gift, pure and simple. Why else would Pops go into a fit?

Marc Gasol said himself that he wasn't sure he would be coming over to the NBA when the Lakers traded his rights to the Grizzlies. So it wasn't like the Grizzlies were guaranteed to get an NBA ready center.

People are still annoyed by the trade because the Grizzlies could've gotten more at the time. If I offer you a lotto ticket for your car, would you take it? No, even though there's a 1 in a million chance you could win the lottery. The trade worked out okay for the Grizzlies at the end because fortunately for them, Gasol and Mayo panned out.

As already posted above, Mayo had nothing to do with this trade.

    ur all mixed.

Marc Gasol's ambivalence was the result of no PT with Lakers; he was gonna sit behind Kwame and Bynum. It's a whole difference situation w Grizz, who had an opening for a Center. plus, Marc had previous played high school ball in Memphis.

Grizz had the 5th pick, T Wolves had the 4th. Grizz used Lakers' first round pick + its 5th spot to move up one spot, to get OJ Mayo.

How many times are people going to whine about this trade?

Talk about beating a topic to death.

Gift trades that have helped two teams reach the Finals five times in three years

You are wrong. Mayo was traded by the T-Wolves along with three other players to Memphis for Kevin Love and three other players. Those other players were all veterans.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2008/news/story?id=3463045

The Grizzles traded the pick they got from LA to Houston in the deal that involved Batum, Donte Green, Joey Dorsey, and Darrell Arthur.

LOL @delusional Faker fans trying to justify this trade. It was a top-3 PF in the NBA for cap relief, nothing more. OJ Mayo had nothing to do with it. The fact that Marc Gasol turned out to be halfway decent (but nowhere near Pau) is just being results-oriented-- at the time he wasn't even in the league and the fact that he was taken 48th doesn't exactly speak highly of his credentials.

The league had a vested interest of bringing their #1 draw back to the top after three years of mediocrity and I have no doubt that they were involved in this "trade". One day the NBA will be exposed for their fraud-- we're already seeing it with Donaghy's claims and can only expect to see more down the line as more fans become disillusioned and vocal.

I feel like a loser latching on to these kinds of conspiracy theories... but I just can't NOT believe there is something going on. I've been living in Utah for a few years, and I know lots of Suns / Jazz / Nuggets fans here who believe this just as much as we Rockets fans and you Clippers fans.

People, let's drop the conspiracy stuff. I agree that IF there was going to be some sort of conspiracy, this trade would be it. But it was sheer cheapness and stupidity that caused the Grizzlies to give Pau to the Lakers with so little in return. With any luck, the Grizzlies will be sold (and maybe move) within a couple of years.

adoo, saying O.J. Mayo is on the verge of stardom just shows how desperate you are. People here aren't stupid enough to believe something just because you say it.
