That is what I thought but I held myself back, Morey is in a Lose Lose Situation. Kobayashi Maru. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobayashi_Maru
He will get targeted eventually for this dual loyalty. Just wait... the purity spiral always leads to insane accusations.
There are 7.4 million people in HK who are going to lose their freedoms. 1.7 million people showed up for a protest. That is 23% of the population. HK was a thriving city for a long time without china. Boo hoo that Yao is inconvenienced.
Yao's daughter is an American citizen. If he loves his country so much he should renounce his daughter's citizenship.
If I was his son/daughter I definitely wouldn't renounce my American citizenship...it's way easier to travel with an American passport. Come to think of it, the HK passport and 回乡证 are even better...you can pretty much go anywhere without a visa, even China. Hong Kong is a f*cking beautiful place. Regardless of what happens in the near future, better days are on the horizon.
At the end of the day Yao is Chinese ( yeah, I know what you’re thinking....well no ****, dude) but it’s like some of y’all forgot, choose to be naive or simply don’t have the slightest clue. Did you guys forget his journey to the NBA and where his loyalties lie? The only reason why he ever came to the NBA and Houston was because the Chinese government allowed it and even then there were very strict terms for the NBA, Houston and most importantly Yao to adhere by. “In 2002, the government released new regulations that would require him and other Chinese players to turn over half of any NBA earnings to the government and China's national basketball association, including endorsements as well as salaries.” Seriously? Half of all your ****... and he was good with it. Think about that for a sec. Furthermore, those that have been around here long enough we all remember the struggle every summer of hoping/wishing Yao not participate in Team China activities to keep him fresh and healthy for our own contention but he was always hell bent on playing for his country and I don’t feel that was forced upon him from above because I genuinely feel it didn’t need to be see Wang Zhizhi. There’s a lot more but I don’t got all day. I’ll end with a couple more things... I found a quote which couldn’t be more true "Yao on one hand is this great symbol of China's modern advancement, a commercial icon that can stride across the Pacific and play the role of a bridge between East and West," he said. "But he's still the product of this system which is one of the last bastions of socialism in China." That quote was from over 10 years ago but at the end of the day it’s clear or should be where Yao stands. He’s always been a Chinese pawn. A very expensive, popular and valuable one at that. In regards to his loyalty I’m pretty sure it goes something like this: China Parents Wife . . . . . . . . . . . Computer gaming . . . . Houston Rockets NBA
Wish he'd have gotten as worked up vs. Carlos Boozer in Game 7. But I can't be mad at yao. Let's separate this political crap from all his contributions we've enjoyed- most significantly, a pretty solid meme face that played well for a few years. Thanks a lot yao.
China: “The most important thing in the world is national sovereignty.” World: “What about natural rights or freedoms?” China: “National sovereignty!” World: “What if Hong Kong or Taiwan don’t want to be part of CCP?” China: “That is highly offensive! You apologize. No free speech! NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY” World: “What the hell is wrong with you?”
When you don’t give a **** about privacy, freedoms of choice or even free speech .... because NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY!.... and you use it to excuse every revolting action taken by the CCP... Then nope, the free world gets it but doesn’t care because it is absurd. The world dealt with Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia being the same way..... its complete bullshit and is setting up another Cold War. The CCP will be able to form a coalition of Russia and North Korea and Syria against the rest of the world.
I genuinely wonder if Chinese know exactly how new this territorial integrity obsession is, or where it comes from. Based on what I've been reading, I imagine they think it is totally organic and it has always been an obsession of the Chinese people.
I will say this. I had several relatives that worked for the Rockets during the Yao years. One of them was fairly high up and saw the players fairly often and had some degree of friendships with some of the players. Without question the nicest and kindest player was Yao Ming. He would take my relative to his restaurant often and he was always friendly with everyone he met. He also was very generous and compassionate. He made such an impression that my relative said he was the best person she has ever met. They still speak several times a year. He calls heron her birthday and Christmas. He called her after her children were born and sent gifts. He strongly wants his country and family proud of him. He has taken taboo positions on AIDS... when the ridiculous CCP claimed there were no children with AIDS in China. I was told Yao was very upset when the Rockets tried to contact him. However he always seemed like someone that wasn’t terribly political and tried to make internal improvements rather than radical changes.
OMG! That's 10% more than an American earning that much would give to the government! Unless you live in a state with a state income tax, where it can be a little as 2% more.
From the perspective of the Mainland, HK has always been trouble even if the vast majority's ancestors come from the Mainland. I dare to say HKers are more eager to protest than Taiwanese. It would be easy and good to just let them go. But you are right it has more to do with the territory than the people. They are so far gone (no pun Drake).
