No. Shane Battier is a Christian. But I read before he studied religion in college, and was very much interested in all kind of religions, including Buddhism.

Shane, you were as impressive in the classroom as you are on the court, my friend, hence my question: How do your daily experiences in the college classroom impact how you approach and play a game? I recall your attraction to Buddhism in particular, and wonder if you're playing with a "Zen mind" these days.

Shane Battier: Great question. Actually, basketball and school have many parallels. Both require a strong will and a quiet mind. If you get too high or too down over the results of either school or basketball, you will be less effective. These are Buddhist principles. It is a very Buddhist train of thought, although I am a Christian.

DP: I know that you studied religion in college. Do you find yourself exploring the Muslim religion a little bit more because of what happened on Sept. 11? Do you find yourself trying to explain that to people who may not understand?

SB: Yes, a little bit. I found myself trying to explain the Muslim faith and the Koran a little bit. I didn't study it intensively, but I understand the basic tenets of the religion, and most of the time I'm explaining to people that Islam is not fundamentally a violent religion. It's actually a very peaceful religion, and before people really draw generalizations they should become educated. I'm just trying to use my knowledge to help their education.

DP: Do you look at that still and wonder how we kill in the name of religion?

SB: It's amazing. Religion is a facet of all societies that really is outside the box in terms of rational thinking where rules apply to social norms. When a religion gets involved, the norms seem to be thrown out the window, and that's part of the reason why I wanted to study religion and find out why.
