This is bound to happen, with competition for phone business SBC, SWB all will need to trim the fat. My father worked at SWB for 40+ years, and their dirty little secret was that it cost them no more to route a long distance call than a local one, they just charged you more, and they also put a long distance hiss or intentional degradation on the line to make it sound more like a long distance call. DD
It was a left over charge from when operators had to physically connect lines in order to hook up a call. The longer the distance, the more operators had to hook up the lines. Once they went to switches, a local call cost the same as a long distance one but they kept charging by the minute. DD
Do people still use landlines? I mean, I still have one at work, but I though cell phones won this battle decisively.
As much as mobile technology has taken the world by storm, America is still very much grounded in land line based telephones. Most people still have and use land lines.
I would NEVER go with a cell phone as my primary phone. They are annoying because they do have dropouts even if you get great coverage and the sound quality on them compared to a standard land line is piss poor.
There once was a day not long ago when this type of news was cheered for political purposes. It's good to see the election is over.
"Cheered" is not the right word, Georgie. More like "wondering when the administration's fiscal policy will begin creating jobs rather than losing them". I think it's safe to say that this hasn't occurred yet, and many wonder if it ever will.
This had nothing to do with the administrations policies, it has everything to do with other companies being allowed to compete with the major phone companies and driving prices down. DD
This is excellent news for SBC stockholders. I hope the managers who hired these superfluous workers get the axe too, just so this kind of nonsense won't happen again. The SBC stockholders deserve better.
