Robert F. Kennedy Jr. launches unlikely presidential bid as a Democrat

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-vaccine activist and attorney from the famed political Kennedy family, announced on Wednesday that he is running for president in 2024 as a Democrat.

Son of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of President John F. Kennedy, the 69-year-old launched his candidacy at Boston Park Plaza in Boston.

"I've come here today to announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States," he said, noting that the aim of his campaign, and presidency, would be to "end the corrupt merger of state and corporate power."

Kennedy, who has espoused vaccine hesitancy since the 2000s, has become one of the most prominent voices in the anti-vaccine movement, according to experts, as the founder of Children's Health Defense, a nonprofit organization known mainly for its anti-vaccine efforts.

Kennedy, a self-described "lifelong Democrat," through his support of what critics call conspiracies about the COVID-19 vaccines, has garnered support from some unlikely bedfellows on the right.

"RFK Jr. could jump into the Republican primary for president, and only [Ron] DeSantis and [former President Donald] Trump, I think, would do better," former Trump adviser Steve Bannon recently said on MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell's streaming program, "Lindell TV."

During his announcement, Kennedy tried to thread the needle between his party affiliation and their opponents.

"During this campaign and during my administration my objective will be to make as many Americans as possible forget that they are Republicans or Democrats and remember that they are Americans," Kennedy said. "We need to focus on the values we share instead of the issues that divide us," he said.

He'll now face Marianne Williamson, a self-help author who announced her bid on March 4. He'll likely also oppose President Joe Biden, who has repeatedly said he intends to run for reelection in 2024 barring some major issues such as his health. However, the Democrat has not officially announced a decision.

The White House declined to comment on Kennedy's presidential announcement on Wednesday, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre invoking the HATCH Act -- a law that restricts political activities of federal employees -- to dodge questions about a potential Biden opponent.

"So it's 2024 -- the HATCH Act -- I'm not going to touch that," she said at a press briefing. "I'm not going to touch that with a 12-foot pole."

Marianne Williamson and RFK. Biden must be shaking in his boots.

As a third party candidate MAYBE Williamson pulls Biden voters but RFK as a third party candidate definitely is pulling Trump voters and virtually no Biden voters.

Trump strategists are dumb enough to think that just because his last name is Kennedy that Democrat voters are blindly going to vote for him out of nowhere. Right…

After watching video highlights, the 60 yer old Robert F. Kennedy Jr. clearly is not ready for prime time. RFKJ made Joe Biden look like a polished public speaker.

I don’t even know who this Marianne Williamson person is…have never heard of her

Biden will cruise in 2024, and I think we could be seeing Gavin Newsom in 2028

Eh… let’s see how she does in the primary state polls closer to the primaries. Namely South Carolina. She’s not winning the primary with only 10% of the Democratic vote. She needs to win the majority of the vote in states like South Carolina to get the nomination. Good luck with that.

Now if she ran as a third party with 10% of the general electorate support would that throw the election to Trump??… absolutely.

Will she do that though… probably not. Even a weirdo like Williamson cares enough about the country in the end to not actively put an autocrat like Trump in office. She did the right thing in 2020 and one would hope she ultimately does the right thing if she loses the primary in 24.

Have you seen how almost every one of his family members have come out against him? The Kennedys are ridin' with Biden

Marianne is really popular among young people and especially young people on TikTok. Kind of interesting because she's just an old lady on the surface, but apparently young people are looking past just the surface. So that's good.

Here's an article on it: https://theintercept.com/2023/04/14/marianne-williamson-tiktok/

Her getting lumped together with RFK Jr. is unfortunate but was also predictable for the horse racers. Oh well.

Her poll numbers are consistent with what Bernie started off with as well. I would love for her to give it to Trump or for Trump to run 3rd party and ruin it for the Republican nominee.

This country needs more than 2 choices. If things don’t change in that regard I don’t see good things in the future.

I’m glad you think she is weirdo too. It makes me like her more.

I generally like weirdos too so I wouldn’t get too excited thinking you are “owning” people like me by politically doing your part to sabotage the imperfect democracy we have.

My favorite band is Radiohead. I like weird stuff and I actually don’t mind Williamson. She’s not serious policy wise though and it’s all feels.

Some states have started rank choice voting which does give you the option to vote for someone like Williamson #1 to feel good about yourself before you rationally put the non corrupt autocrat ahead of the corrupt autocrat. Rank choice voting already exists and is a clean way to solve this issue immediately without rewriting the constitution at the federal level.

Let me take a guess? You are against rank choice voting?

Also go look up what party supports ranked choice vs the party that doesn’t. You are wanting Trump to become president again knowing that this guy represents a party that not only doesn’t support rank choice voting, but literally tries to overturn elections.

    Your logic makes total sense.

    interesting read…thanks

seems like she could be a real asset to the Democratic party…a young female Bernie type without the socialist labels

I wonder what her support among minorities is like

Am I misremembering, or didn't Biden all but declare/promise he was a one-term President?

I think an open primary would be healthy for Democrats. The bench needs some work.

Right now Williamson has my vote. I dismissed her as an Oprah 'woo woo' nonsense airhead in 2020, but she's actually fantastic.

    For the Williamson voters here:

How has she said yet that she'll get the votes in the Senate and the House to pass her desired Universal Healthcare plan? Running to the left of Biden on issues like healthcare is nothing new. I'm not that interesting in rehashing the same ole primary debate about healthcare with the Bernie left just using pie in the sky promises they know they can't deliver without real policy that can get passed.

I'm not saying I prefer Biden over Williamson in theory, but Biden has a better case to make to people like me with his track record of knowing how to work the Congressional legislative tightrope to actually get stuff I care about done.

Having a Dem primary is a good thing for sure I agree with Donny, but if we want any of these candidates to be seriously in the mix, and not just playing the Bernie card, they are going to have a hard time this time around with the electorate seeing now what Biden can actually get accomplished legislatively. I think "feels" candidates will have a tough time with the Democratic primary voters while proven legislators like Gretchen Witmer and Newsome I think have a much much better shot at providing the Dem primary voter with a better option than Biden moving forward.... if your goal is to actually get sh$t done, and you aren't in it for "feels".

I don’t think people really view her as a serious candidate…she can help to get young people motivated and active in the voting process tho…hopefully it’s not another 2016 Bernie Bros situation

I think she's only viewed as a threat as a third party ticket. In Dem circles they actually are more concerned about Joe Manchin who is a bigger threat to splitting the ticket among Dem voters.

To the credit of Bernie in 16, 20, and Williamson in 20, they ultimately showed they cared more about the country than their own ego by not running 3rd party as a spoiler like Nader, and George Wallace did. Just think how much damage to our country was done because of Ralph Nader's ego. Had he done the right thing for the country there would be no war in Iraq, and we'd be living in a vastly different global environment.

Now if Florida and other states in 2000 all had rank choice voting... I would have been happy to see Nader run 3rd party with many voters being polled in Florida that they would have voted Al Gore 2nd over Bush. I think the official number was like 20,000 voters would have swung from W to Gore in that case while still using their voice via vote to choose Nader.

Point being... Williamson running for the Dem nomination... great. Go for it, and I'll even give you chance to consider during Super Tuesday when I personally get to vote here in Texas. Running as a third party candidate just to serve your ego like Nader.... No bueno.... at least until we (hopefully) get ranked-choice voting in Texas.

Hahaha you obviously have no idea about my politics. My politics isn't "vote blue whoever" as I was agaisnt Obama nd Clinton. I'm for REAL policy making. How in the hell do you think Marianne is going pass a single piece of legislation with no contacts in congress? Bernie sanders was in the senate for 40 years and he couldn't move a single one of his priorities last year WHILE WAS HE HEAD OF BUDGET COMMITTEE that wrote the bills.

Joe manchin literally told Bernie he could "go to hell" to CNN. Legislating and actually getting **** done isn't the same as writing funky policy ideas on paper.

Aoc to this date hasn't even written the green new deal. Aoc hasn't even passed a single bill she's written but yeah Marianne is going pass Medicare for all Hahahahahahaaha.

I'm a partisan robot cuz I stand up for workers and not the billionaires. I don't give a crap what you label me
