Former Milwaukee Bucks and current Denver Nuggets coach George Karl has been found to have prostate cancer and is expected to undergo surgery later this week.
A close friend of Karl's, who requested anonymity, told The Journal Times Tuesday that Karl was told that he had prostate cancer just more than two months ago. Karl and his family and friends have since discussed methods in which to deal with the situation and recently decided to have surgery.
Karl, who is 54, played a prominant role in the resurgence of the Bucks. In his first season as coach, he guided the Bucks to the Eastern Conference playoffs for the first time in seven years. Two years later, Karl's team won the Central Division title for the first time since 1986.
In 2001, Karl led the Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games.
The surgery will be performed at a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
"They think they caught the cancer early enough,'' said a friend of Karl's.

They think?!?!? that's scary. I never liked George Karl, but I wouldn't wish cancer upon him.

Early enough to prevent having the entire prostate removed? Or early enough to prevent further health problems in other areas?
    Sheesh, that sucks.

From what i got from ESPN was they did catch it early enough so he should be ok w/o any other problems. I doubt he'll have a general surgeon doing the operation, so i'd expect a full recovery.

Kinda the same situation Joe Torre had last year.

When have general surgeons ever done this type of surgery?

Prostate cancer is not a deadly disease. Many patients have 15+ years
    of survival.

Plenty of times. Not everyone in America has health insurance and can wait on a specialist. But is a more common practice in other countries.
