They have to do the math that way when looking at overall team payroll. Think of it in terms of money leaving your wallet.

ref.. yes but you can't expect jeff to look at it as.. oh im getting 4 mil from past years plus 3 mil.. thast 7 mil

he's already earned that money and it shouldn't make a difference in his salary for next year...

he did the astros a favor by letting them delay payments more than likely

Yes you can; he still hasn't received that money. He will get paid 5.5 million this year whether he plays or not. So yes, it can be counted. No one hear can argue that he deserves, nor will get a bigger contract than 4 to 5 million from any team.

I think what he means is that the atros can't say well we are already paying you 5 million so add the 3 million in a new contract and you'll really be making 8 million.

Liken it to this (not a great example but one nonetheless), You have a 5 year contract job making 40k a year for a company that mails you your checks. You finish the job in year 5 but your last 40k paycheck gets lost in the mail. The company cancels the check and in the process of re-issuing it decides hey that guy did good work, we were happy with him lets get him back to do some more work. The CEO calls you up and says we really liked your work we want you to come work for us again for 2 years. We'll pay you 40k total for the job. But don't worry you'll still be getting that 40k we owe you so it will be like you are really making 80k. Would you go for it?

Having said that I do think 3-4 mil is a fair offer for Kent. He won't get much more than that from anyone else. The Astros just can't use the making 8 million ffor the season as leverage, because 5 of it is for service already rendered.

castor.. that's exactly what I was trying to say...

I think I'd give him 4.5mil . with another 500k or so if he achieves at least 100 RBI's again..

I agree; i just think its more likely that Kent will take a smaller contract because he's already got 5.5 million coming to him.
