    boy,

My hope also is that Afghanistan is made a shining example of what can be done for another country on hard times.

    treeman,

Although I agree with you to a degree, the U.S. HAS on occasion actually gone into a country that has elected a leader through democratic means and helped to oust that leader, sometimes before they are even given a chance to rule (ala Chile).

    DREAMer,

The Cold War is over. We've done many things in the name of fighting Communism (and fascism when it propped its head up, although Communists tend to see us as fascists) that were distasteful. No one's hands are completely clean of blood. But I'd have to say that for a superpower that could conceivably take over the planet if it wanted to, our hands are stained to a pretty insignificant degree. We could have killed billions had we been as indiscriminate or as uncaring as the Soviets.

We are about the only major power this century who has not started a war in order to steal someone else's territory (although the evil Brits have calmed down, too). We are invariably the reactionary when it comes to military action - someone else always triggers the war, we just respond. Sometimes we preempt, but... Name a conflict, and I guarantee the trigger's not too hard to find.

I just get really tired of the anti-US propagandists who totally ignore the fact that 95% of the time when we intervene somewhere, we do much more good than harm.
