The player that seemed to Win The Day, using a famous Chip Kelly slogan, was tight end Kahale Warring. Early in practice, Warring couldn't hang on to an excellently placed throw from AJ McCarron. A pair of defensive backs each got a hand on the ball and knocked it away, but it would've been a confidence booster for Warring to make a first down catch, no doubt. A little while later, Warring had a ball thrown slightly behind him that he couldn't reach back and make the catch. Now, Plastic Man would've struggled to make that catch, though, but it was another target that didn't end up in a reception. Furthermore, those were his only opportunities to that point and I was hoping that Watson or McCarron would look him up later to stoke his confidence a bit. A few plays later, he made a semi-difficult catch on a slant route and I wrote in my notes that that catch could be the one that gives him a bit of a boost.

A few drives later, Warring was on the field with Deshaun Watson and the quarterback looked him up in the end zone. Warring ran a corner route near the back of the end zone while the defense was in man coverage. Watson lofted one to the back corner and Warring leapt above the defensive back in coverage and snatched the ball out of the air as if that was the last pass on earth. Touchdown! His teammates went crazy and I'm not really sure if Warring realized what he'd done. He kind of had this quizzical look on his face after he came down with the touchdown but his teammates all knew - that was a DUDE Play.

When the offense went down the field the other way, AJ McCarron hit Warring on a rollout for a first down. Then, a few plays later, the last play of the day, McCarron sent Warring deep down the field and launched one near the end zone. Warring, again, went up to snatch the pass and then kept his feet so he could make a mini-dive into the end zone. Another touchdown! It was an excellent day for Warring and I hope he can bottle this and use these superpowers in 2020 and beyond. Those catches were ones that he made at San Diego State and hopefully this will boost his confidence in the future.

Whenever analysts and talking heads discuss the receiver position, very rarely is DeAndre Carter's name mentioned as a factor in the passing game. The thing is, though, that Carter has been outstanding, catching nearly everything thrown his way and he's making catch after catch all over the field. I thought the best catch he had today was one in which defensive back John Reid was draped all over him on a crossing route and Carter still was able to latch on to the throw from AJ McCarron. A few plays later at the end of the drive, the offense faced a 4th down and goal at the four yard line. Carter broke to the outside and McCarron hit him with the pass. Carter, then, turned up the field and snuck the ball inside the pylon for a "gotta have it" touchdown on fourth down. I've said this before about Carter - he's the type of player good teams must have because he knows every receiver position, returns kicks and comes up with big plays in key spots (@ Jets 2018 & @ Bucs 2019 come to mind). With a couple of receivers out of practice, Carter continues to make plays, efficiently and effectively.

The defense had moments in this practice as well, but the best one was probably a juggling Eric Murray interception. Fellow defensive back Bradley Roby was in man coverage on tight end Jordan Thomas and Murray came over to help on the play. Deshaun Watson eyed Thomas and let fly down the field. Roby got a hand on the ball and tipped the ball into the air. Because Roby tipped it, the ball "got on" Murray quicker than he expected, sort of like a grounder takes a bad hop and ricochets into a third baseman's chest. Murray, though, never lost concentration on the ball and was able to corral the interception after tipping the ball back into the air himself.

The defensive backs made a number of impressive pass break ups during the day. In addition to the interception Murray had, mentioned above, cornerback Cornell Armstrong was able to chop the ball out of a receiver's hands as the ball arrived in the end zone for one outstanding pass breakup.

A few plays later, safety Michael Thomas made one of the best plays of camp. Actually, it was one of the best competitive players all around - quarterback, tight end and safety - this play was one of the best reps of camp. Quarterback AJ McCarron led the team into the red zone, down inside the ten yard line. He went back to pass and saw Jordan Thomas down the seam with Michael Thomas covering him. JT seemed to snatch the pass over the top of the shorter Thomas, clutching it in one hand above his head. But, because Michael was tight in coverage Jordan Thomas couldn't bring the ball into his chest. Michael then just started chopping and swiping at the ball and eventually knocked it away as the two fell to the ground. The defense got hyped as the ball hit the turf.

Earlier in the drill when Deshaun Watson had the offense on the field, he threw a touchdown to Duke Johnson...and I'd like to tell you more about the play but I can't. You'll see it soon enough.

One of my favorite plays of the day occurred later in practice. Deshaun Watson was in the gun and as the play clock wound down, he tried to get the defense to show its hand and it worked. He examined the defense and changed the play at the line of scrimmage (or appeared to). On the snap, he stepped back and let fly down the sideline to David Johnson who went up and snagged the pass, but unfortunately he landed out of bounds. Regardless, I loved the cat and mouse game that Watson had going with the defense, not to mention the fact that he could rely on Johnson to make the proper adjustment when necessary.

Seahawks, Raiders also interested but Raiders interest is split between Gruden and Mayock (Gruden not). Clowney won't lower his price. "The longer this goes on he doesn't care because he doesn't practice anyway." ... "And if you can get his price down from 17, how do I know he's in shape? If he's coming in a week before the opening game?" ... "I would rather pay Ngakoue the $17M than Clowney because Clowney I think you're only going to get 5 or 6 games out of him."

Texans camp observations: Trade candidates, breakout players

But who are the exceptions, the players teams would be willing to put in a waiver claim for or perhaps send the Texans a pick to acquire? Near the end of the Texans’ second week of padded practices, three men come to mind.

Keke Coutee: After landing in O’Brien’s doghouse last season because of a lack of attention to detail, Coutee has had a strong start to camp. O’Brien and receivers coach John Perry have praised the third-year slot receiver’s work ethic. But Coutee, who has received off-days for the Texans’ past two practices, doesn’t have the benefit of preseason games to prove he’s a reliable return man, and without that, it could be harder for the Texans to cut returner/fellow slot receiver DeAndre Carter. Plus, Coutee’s path to significant playing time is blocked by Randall Cobb, whom the Texans signed to a three-year, $27 million deal. Coutee has been injury-prone but has obvious potential, and with two years left on his rookie deal, a receiver-needy team might consider him worth trading a late-round pick for. If one does, then O’Brien must make a choice. What’s more valuable to him: a gadget player who provides depth behind a 30-year-old Cobb or another pick in 2021, when the Texans don’t have first- or second-round selections?

Kahale Warring: Practically every time O’Brien has been asked about the 2018 third-round pick out of San Diego State, he’s indicated that Warring faces a steep learning curve after spending his rookie year on injured reserve. But how long are the Texans willing to wait on the developmental tight end prospect? His athletic testing numbers are impressive and he looks the part in pads, but he’s yet to flash in camp.

Jordan Thomas, meanwhile, has come back in shape and impressed while competing with Warring for the third and potentially final tight end job. If the Texans don’t find a place for Warring on the 53-man roster and believe another team would claim him on waivers, which would keep him off Houston’s practice squad, then the Texans could try to trade him to salvage some value. But if the Texans could get a pick for Warring, it’d likely be a late-round selection. He didn’t produce stellar numbers in college and has put nothing on tape since entering the NFL. Jordan Thomas: Alternatively, if the Texans believe Warring’s potential is too tantalizing to give up on just yet, they could look to move Thomas for a late pick. Given the way the competition at tight end is trending, though, trading Thomas seems less likely than trading Warring. At 6-foot-5, 277 pounds, Thomas has the build to fill the traditional tight end role next season, when the Texans could look to cut the 34-year-old Darren Fells for cap relief or lose him to retirement.

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- The Houston Texans finished up the portion of training camp that was open to the media — 10 media members total, 10 practices total — with a scrimmage inside NRG Stadium on Thursday night. It was a scrimmage that hung precariously in the balance over the previous 24 hours, for both weather and societal reasons. As it turned out, Hurricane Laura shifted to the east overnight and the Texan players opted against making the scrimmage part of a social justice statement (like nine other NFL teams did by canceling practice on Thursday), and they moved ahead with the practice game, as planned. Yes, you read that right — a scrimmage was nearly cancelled over two different possible circumstances and NEITHER of them was related to the coronavirus. 2020, y'all! So now, with four practices to go, Bill O'Brien will soon need to identify his 53-man roster for Week 1 in Kansas City. For now, here are my thoughts on Thursday's scrimmage inside the stadium:

I'll start the post with what happened at the very end, after the scrimmage had ended. Once the coaches and staff all left the field to go to the locker room, the Texans players stayed at midfield, gathered around all on one knee, while Kenny Stills conducted a very passionate speech, presumably about racial inequality (full disclosure, we couldn't hear from the stands, but Stills is one of the faces of social justice in the NFL). That was followed by J.J. Watt addressing the team for several minutes, before our time was up, as media, and we were required to leave. Watt was still going when we left. O'Brien said after the game that they had discussions all day inside the building about how best to invoke action in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting, so we will see where it goes from here. But for those wondering, it was absolutely a front burner issue inside the walls of NRG Stadium on Thursday.

As for the scrummage itself, the big thing O'Brien wanted to do was simulate a game day, and that doesn't just mean the game itself, but also the pregame walk through, warmups, and player introductions. Hell, they even played Clay Walker after 24-yard field goals. IT FELT REAL TO ME, DAMMIT! As for the format, the first string offense and second string offense took turns going against the second string defense and first string defense, respectively.

As you can imagine, Deshaun Watson moved the ball up and down the field with relative ease against the Texans backups. A couple times, things bogged down in the red zone, and Ka'imi Fairbairn came out to kick field goals, but Watson also led a couple touchdown drives. One was an absolute gorgeous throw from about 20 yards out to Kenny Stills in the back left corner of the end zone (he smoked Gareon Conley on the play), and the other a Watson zone read inside the 10-yard line.

Skill players with gold stars next to their names -- Duke Johnson, looked explosive in the running and passing game; David Johnson, continued to look very smooth catching the ball out of the backfield; Will Fuller, made a spectacular diving catch along the sideline in the first half (didn't play in the second half, as they continue to ramp him up gradually for the regular season); DeAndre Carter, several sneaky slot catches in the middle of the field, he is having a nice camp.

Skill players with red arrows pointing down next to their names -- Jordan Thomas, a brutal drop on third down that had him livid at himself; Kahale Warring, followed his great practice on Tuesday up with a dud for this scrimmage, including a third down play where he looked for the ball over the wrong shoulder on a fade pass from Watson; Chad Hansen, my "camp crush" got his shoulder injured by an overzealous Lonnie Johnson, who tackled Hansen in a scrimmage that was supposed to involve no tackling.

On Wednesday, Anthony Weaver was asked to name three players who have had great camps so far, and the first name he came up with was linebacker Jacob Martin. This scrimmage made Weaver look like a very smart man, as Martin was continually in the backfield all evening long, and scored a touchdown on a scoop and score off an A.J. McCarron fumbled snap.

Speaking of McCarron, if the Texans are going to have to win a game at some point without Deshaun Watson, I am fearful it may not happen with McCarron, who has been fairly abysmal throughout camp, holding onto the ball way too long, and just throwing the ball very inconsistently. Worth noting, Cody Kessler (former Brown, Eagle, Jag, and I'm sure I'm missing a team or two) was in for a tryout this week.

Rookie watch -- Ross Blacklock, definitely part of the rotation on the defensive line; Jonathan Greenard, injured and did not appear; John Reid, got some time with the first string at slot corner and returned punts, good night for him; Charlie Heck, didn't see much time; Isaiah Coulter, injured and did not appear. If you're looking for an undrafted rookie who is getting mentioned by O'Brien, keep an eye on tight end Dylan Stapleton. I don't think he makes the 53-man roster, but I could see them keeping him on the practice squad.

The scrimmage ended with A.J. Moore, getting some quality time with the first unit at safety, making a spectacular one-handed grab on an interception thrown by McCarron (I'm telling you, McCarron has been BAD this camp.). I think Moore, largely viewed as a special teamer since coming over to the Texans a couple years ago, is sewing up the third safety spot.

Pendergast: Texans Scrimmage At NRG Stadium Two Weeks Ahead Of Season-Opener Against Chiefs

What do you think the Texans and Chiefs will do on opening night? Think they might protest by not playing? Leaving the politics aside for the moment, what would the NFL/NBC response be if that was to happen? I'm sure the McNairs and Hunts are hoping they can support their players and the cause without having to straddle the fence to the corporate interests. Tough needle to thread, but will be an interesting follow.

I can respect this and if you truly want to make a stand never play again. You will be replaced in short order. Somethings are more important than supporting your family.
