"Angel gets really frustrated when guys question him on balls and strikes." "'He told me, 'He gets 4 wrong a game'". "We have technology to call balls and strikes." I love Hinch, if anyone knows how much of a sh!tbag Hernandez is, then you know exactly what happened, yall can hate Hinch all you want.
He’s always been an older prospect, he’s never hit for power, he has no speed, he can’t play SS or CF, he was not a high draft pick, and he has a fairly lengthy injury history. That’s why he’s never shown up on prospect lists. But...he’s always had a plus contact tool, does provide solid defense at 2B/3B/1B, and was an overslot draftee (so should be looked at as more of a 6th-7th rounder than a 14th rounder). If his spring power carries over to AAA he will get a chance later this year either when another team pries him away via trade or when an infielder in Houston goes down with an injury. But there’s zero chance he makes the opening day roster.
I’m sure Angel didn’t like the “we have technology to help you get better” comment. Lol. What’s the deal with him? Is he untouchable by the league? Do we not have a farm system of umps that can slide in and replace him? It’s weird that this guy still calls games.
Umpire Union. They've been trying to do "reviews" of the umps for the past few years with computers, trackman, etc..., yet the same shitty umps end up in the postseason. So I don't know.
Hinch's postgame comments angered Hernandez. "He said that? Write it," Hernandez said before adding, "No comment. He got ejected for arguing balls and strikes. That's it." Link
Kinsler certainly wasn't one to hold back his thoughts on Angel Hernandez. Joe West shouldn't be allowed to ump a game at MMP ever again. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...l-hernandez-day-umpire-messing-baseball-games
"He said some condescending things that were inappropriate and unprofessional and I'll leave it at that." -- Hinch Crash should have called him a c********r. Holy **** how have I never seen this? "re-evaluate your career choice" "He's changing the game. He needs to find another job. He really does."
Peacock is in fact throwing his changeup today. eta: he also just spun a meatball slider that Realmuto hit about 500 feet. eta2: Peacock's slider and change have bumfuzzled the LHBs of the Phillies.
He's also currently suing MLB in federal court for racial discrimination, so it's not like they can do much about him right now.
Funny how the racial discrimination suit is going to help him keep his job, despite his incompetence. I mean how has he been discriminated against? He's worked WS and All Star games despite sucking at his job. This is the kind of thing that gives employers pause when it comes to hiring minorities. This may be an uncomfortable discussion for some, but it's true.
Angel shouldn’t be fired. But relying on him, and other umps, to call balls and strikes is so stupid. MLB needs to do a technological ball/strike zone, and the HP ump can live call fouls, runs, balks, etc., and all of which subject to review/replay. The “4 wrong calls per game” thing Angel is saying is evidence of just that. Fans don’t need human error to impact the game, certainly not as frequently at the rate which it occurs. Coaches should want it too...will save them a lot of money in fines from arguing strikes. Honestly I don’t understand why the umps union doesn’t want it to. It will make their jobs easier. They aren’t being fully replaced, even if their role is smaller.
Of course he should be, he's terrible at his job. This is just item #9784 of the evidence against him. https://sports.yahoo.com/awful-umpiring-angel-hernandez-lawsuit-mlb-bosses-falls-flat-072329959.html
I say no to robo umps. Varying strike zones are a part of the charm of baseball. So are face to face, spittle-flying, dirt kicking shouting matches. You don't get that in other sports.
