I sure hope Boras gets roasted on that one. His “go for the throat” mentality almost certainly cost his client a lot of money. He’s a super agent but he has had several clients the last few years end up getting hugely disappointed.
Well, hell, that's all I need to know. Personally I think they're more of an 11.4, but agree to disagree.
Of all the super elite teams really only the Astros and Yankees made significant upgrades to taking a step forward. The Red Sox, Indians and Cubs made parallel moves adding a quality vet name to replace another quality vet. Nats basically stood pat. Dodgers pursuit of everyone was a disaster. No Darvish, no #2 starter, lost almost all of their elite set up men.
He still has done well with upper end free agents. His waiting tactic doesn't work for lesser free agents that received a QO, and he really misjudged how teams would view Moustakas.
Happened to him years ago with Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales. He had them go into the season without a deal. Lost a lot of money, and their careers fell off.
You seem to be making an assumption he would have come here for something close to that number. I'm guessing he was willing to take a prove-it deal somewhere where he is guaranteed 500+ ABs and the lion's share of C starts.
Gattis and Beltran had over 800 PA between them last year. Houston could easily have promised Lucroy 400 PA. Not to mention they could have sold Lucroy on potential for a ring and potential for an extension. I actually think the reason Houston didn’t sign Lucroy was a combination of their faith in Stassi, availability of Realmuto, and fear that Lucroy would be bad for clubhouse chemistry.
Agree with 400 PA. I think that's a significant distance from 500 AB, which I don't think they could guarantee him. Given his down year and his age, I really think he wanted to rebuild his status if he took a 1 year deal. I could be wrong. But I don't think we can look back and say with any degree of certainty that he was available to Houston at the same price he signed for.
I think that means Keuchel will cost 4 or 5 years around 27 million per year if he can stay healthy. If he goes Cy Young again then maybe 30 million per season. He will be a year younger when he hits the market and loss in velocity isn't a concern for Keuchel like it for Arrieta.
