Thats impressive. Notice all the teams in-front of the Astros are perennial contenders/title winning teams.
Bogey got sent down today, sucks for him. I was really hoping he would take off this spring but Bourgeois has been killing it, it was hard not to see him make the team. I think he still has options which may have helped the Stros in their decision making.
The Crawfish boxes have an article this morning about why JB Shuck may make the team. Being a Wade draft pick, the argument is that maybe Wade wants to have one of "his guys" make it to the bigs, whereas he inherited Bogey. Idea being that if the team is sold, Wade can say "look, my draft picks are making it to the Show". But Shuck is a lefty stick, corner outfielder, good speed, good bunter, etc., and we need a lefty bat off the bench. I'm with you though, I figured it'd be Bogey. I can't see Shuck making the team over Bourgeois, but it's interesting that Shuck is still here and not Bogey.
It's impressive that a franchise is still ranked 14th after attendance and performance has dropped drastically since the 2005 season.
not when you're in the 4th largest city in the US and the 10th largest media market. this isn't all tied to on-the-field performance. i'm not impressed. the new network will help.
Nieve is just a roster filler. The Astros only have 3 starting pitching prospects ready for Triple A (Jordan Lyles, Sergio Perez, Douglas Arguello) somebody has to fill those other 2 rotation slots, and he's a good a player as any, not that it really means anything.
zacharylevine Astros shortstop Clint Barmes has a fracture in his left hand. Likely out 4-6 weeks. -Z
I feel bad saying this, but I'm happy that Barmes will be on the DL (though of course not happy he has a broken hand). I'd rather Manzella or Sanchez be playing. Barmes inspires no confidence in me.
Astros Rule 5 Draft selection right-handed pitcher Lance Pendleton has been tendered back to the Yankees, who accepted.
pretty interesting that he led the league in pinch hits last year while being from an American league team.
He played for the Brewers last year but was non-tendered and signed a minor league deal with the Rays last month.
Wade should go after Jeremy Hermida. He had a great spring for the Reds but they have too much depth in the outfield so he was cut. He has to option to opt out of his minor league deal now and look for a big league job. He would provide a good left handed handed hitter off the bench and has more upside than someone like Jason Bourgeois.
I would say that it's a terrible move for a team in the Astros' position. Whatever they end up trading for him, be it a player or cash, is a complete waste. For a team that will struggle to finish higher than 4th place, the last thing they need to do is give up actual assets in exchange for a 33-year old backup infielder.
What kind of assets do you think we would have to give up for a utility player??? It will be for a throw away prospect!! Thats all!! Good move!
