It's pretty strange that the number two country in medals is nearly invisible when it comes to track and field.
Well the UK and Us had way mre competitors than other nations. Think china was 6th in terms of numer of athletes.
China dominates obscure sports; they got a bunch of medals off of badminton. They also aren't great at team sports. The US got medals in beach volleyball, volleyball, mens/womens basketball, womens soccer, etc... India doesn't have a dedicated sports program akin to the US/China/Russia.
Hey guys, I really enjoyed watching the Olympics in London this past week but at one time when I was watching I heard one of the commentators mention that the Olympics have been going on for more than 3000 years! I thought to myself wow that's crazy! But then I realized it's only 2012 how could it have been going on for more than 3000 years? Weird...
Considering how big a country we are, how rich and the fact that we have every type of athlete imaginable (unlike homogeneous China, with 4.5 as many people) we should win the medal count and really, by more than we did.
Does Argentina have any promising young guys not getting any burn? It feels like once these older guys fade out Argentina is going to be in big trouble. Manu, Scola, prigioni, and Nocioni all 32 and up. Delfino will be 30 this month. I forgot how important their success must be to Argentina, since the country as a whole isn't highly competitive in these kinds of competitions.
people in India are too busy worrying about when their next meal is going to come from rather than practicing sports.
Ummm, well to start off with, human existence has been around for more than 3,000 years. Time existed before year one. The original ancient Greek olympic games began in 776 BC, 2,788 years ago. Close enough to roughly round up to 3,000. Those games lasted almost 1,200 years until 393 AD. The "Modern Olympic Games", as you'll hear them called, began in 1896. So the modern version has been around for 116 years now.
Brief history, we won both most golds and most medals in 2004, 2000, and 1996. In 1992 we came in 2nd to the "Unified Team" that was made up of former Soviet Union republics. We came in 3rd behind the USSR and East Germany in 1988. We won the Los Angeles Games in '84 in part because those 2 countries (as well as 14 others) boycotted the games in response to the US leading a boycott of the '80 Moscow games. Those boycotting teams in '84 formed their own "Friendship Games" in which the USSR won 126 Gold medals and 282 overall. We were pretty dominant between WWI and WWII. The Soviet Union and then later East Germany started getting the better of us in the 70s. The US took the top spot back when those countries fell in the early 90s and now China has become our main Olympic rival.
India I know a little.... If it comes to religious games they might be there but altogether not much interest in sports and not many good athletes
not if you know history and china has not been full member of IOC or full participating the Games ... must be somewhere in the 80s
haha think folks think Ancient greek games are not the same as the new revived games in the Modern Era
