I think Fisher being a depreciated asset has a lot to do with it. At this point Fisher has minimal trade value, so we're getting close to dumping him. Much like with Tyler White the organization is using the massive cushion we have this season to try and grow assets instead of losing them for nothing.
Definitely, but I'm pretty sure they actually expected (as did I) White to be a cheap and fairly productive hitter for multiple years, not a low power K machine. Had they expected White to drop off this hard they certainly would have sold high.
Based on Luhnow's comments about Alvarez's defense, I don't think he gets called up, at a minimum, until Altuve and Diaz are back. At that point, Gurriel can be moved back to 1B, White dropped, and Alvarez as the nearly full-time DH.
That sounds about right. That's plenty of time for him to sink or swim and see if he's a part of the 25 man headed into October.
If it’s important that Alvarez be able to play 1B then why aren’t we playing him there more in AAA? At least his last five games have been in LF or DH.
Fix his swing. Losing weight may be a byproduct, but I doubt just cutting calories and hitting treadmill by themselves will help his swing.
My gut gets in the way of my golf swing and actually slows down my club speed. Looks like the same thing is happening with White.
I've seen plenty of heavy guys swing a bat fast. White's bat looks slightly slower, and his balance looks like it is gone as well. He likely needs to do whatever MLB players do to increase bat speed and possibly the baseball equivalent of something like Yoga.
Astros need to get White back to minors, his confidence has been crushed or he’s battling an injury (undisclosed). It sucks that he isn’t doing better, he had a great story about beating the odds. But an OPS under .600 for a position player at DH & 1st Base is BAD!!! Those are premium offensive positions that should be OPS in the .750 to .800’s.... I’m hoping he figures it out because he may never get this type of opportunity again. It’s apparent Luhnow believes in his ability.
Maybe White should just lean into it... Sorry for the crappy video but it's the only one I could find. (If you haven't seen "Brockmire", I suggest you drop what you're doing right now and go watch it. I believe the first 2 season are on Hulu)
I wonder who gets called up first, Alvarez or Tucker. Considering that Tucker is already on the 40 man roster. But I think since White is out of options (from what I remember), Alvarez may as well just slide into his place on the 40 man roster. Either way both of those guys are mashing the ball in Round Rock. Alvarez has done it all season, Tucker for about a month (he did have that horrid start). But both have a lot of work to do in regards to their fielding.
