Hey guys, im mostly all work and no play.

Are there any hobbies or sports you guys know of I could do in Houston (preferably not in the scorching sun)

I was thinking Krav Maga, but i dont think there are competitions in those. I do like however that its a skill i can possibly use in real life situations

I want to be able to learn something new and then actually participate in tournaments and such.

Preferably a physical hobby or sport.

Someone will obviously say basketball...but my cardio is awful and i have feet problems after running a lot.

    Thanks.

Ballroom Dancing -- and i'm serious

Can be highly competitive. You compete with a girl. You can do it casually at social events all over town. And all while in AC. UofH has groups classes starting soon open to the public.

Besides foot problems what kind of shape are you in and how old are you. You say you want to compete so it is important.

The cardio can be improved by doing cardio.
The foot problems might be relieved by losing weight.

    Ball is life.

    28. I'm medium sized (30 lbs heavier than someone should be at my height according to rhe internet?). Been going to the gym a lot recently. So far able to bench press 85% my weight.

How bad are your feet? I was about to suggest power lifting but you won't be close to "competitive" at that strength. You could still compete though. Also it is indoors and not time heavy like other sports when you first start. The first few years would be 4 times a week.

I was just at the Summer Power Fest and there were plenty of old guys and beginners competing.

Nothing more fun and addicting than tennis. Drills, leagues, tournaments, pick up at the parks. And you can play for life. I've see 70-80 yr olds playing regularly.

You could join the Crossfit cult, not a lot of competitions, and the ones they have are outdoors, but the rest is indoors and it's probably the same intensity.

Swimming would probably be another good option.

You could also do competitive erg rowing, that's the ergometer/rowing machine in gyms where you're pulling a handle on a cord with a wheel at the end. Me and a friend were on the seventh boat in third form crew together with two others, you'd practice on those ergs when you weren't out on the river and it would show strokes per minute. We would bet shirts when we competed with other schools; I spent something like $70 on shirts and didn't have one at the end of the year. But he does indoor rowing competitions now.

Is it tacky that I suggest crossfit because that sport seems to be up you're alley

raquetball is physically draining, but you're on a small court. The better you get, the more efficient you get in terms of movement. And yet it's a hell of a workout. Can be super competitive in ladder play, tournaments, etc at all different skill levels. Just 1 on 1 (or 2 on 2, or 3 man) so easy to find people to play. And of course all indoors

Impossible to find players outside of a university though. Better than tennis because indoors and lifetime play, worse for finding playing partners.

Also, don't play with newbs unless you want a racquetball racket to the face.

    Golf.

If your feet are really bad you can become a professional fapper like Jontro.
