Name some non-mainstream artists in various genres?

Am I the only one who finds it strange that "artist" automatically means musician?

I clicked on this thread expecting to see info on non-mainstream artists in various genres like sculpture, architecture, or even dance or something.

I think most of the "art" listed is more craft, or artisanry.

But, my all-time favoritist band that nobody's ever heard of or liked is Olivia Tremor Control. As far as I am concerned they were mind-numbingly awesome, but everybody else just says, "Meh."

If it helps you hipsters to give it a try, they were named by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, who they in turn named. I remember reading somewhere that it was a dare to see who could come up with a goofier name:
