I thought about this awhile back but it is simple. Go back to the year you were born (for me it is 1973) and pick your album of the year all the way to the present. For the album to qualify for that year, it must have been released sometime during that calendar year (Jan 1 through Dec 31).

For me, it is as follows:

    1973 - Can - "Future Days"
    1974 - Kraftwerk - "Autobahn"
1975 - Bob Dylan - "Blood on the Tracks"
1976 - Lee "Scratch" Perry - "Super Ape"
    1977 - Pink Floyd - "Animals"
1978 - Pere Ubu - "The Modern Dance"
1979 - Public Image Ltd. - "Metal Box" (just barely over Gang of Four's "Entertainment!")
1980 - Captain Beefheart - "Doc at the Radar Station"
1981 - Gang of Four - "Solid Gold"
    1982 - Roxy Music - "Avalon"
    1983 - Tom Waits - "Swordfishtrombones"
1984 - Nick Cave - "From Her to Eternity"
    1985 - The Fall - "This Nation's Saving Grace"
1986 - The Smiths - "The Queen Is Dead"
1987 - Van Morrison - "Poetic Champions Compose"
    1988 - Sonic Youth - "Daydream Nation"
1989 - The Stone Roses - "The Stone Roses"
    1990 - Neil Young - "Ragged Glory"
1991 - Primal Scream - "Screamadelica" (just barely over My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless")
1992 - Faith No More - "Angel Dust"
    1993 - Slowdive - "Souvlaki"
    1994 - Portishead - "Dummy"
    1995 - Tricky - "Maxinquaye"
    1996 - DJ Shadow - "Endtroducing..."
    1997 - Radiohead - "OK Computer"
    1998 - Massive Attack - "Mezzanine"
    1999 - Sigur Ros - "Agaetis Byrjun"
    2000 - Radiohead - "Kid A"
2001 - Bob Dylan - "Love and Theft"
    2002 - Wilco - "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"
2003 - British Sea Power - "The Decline of British Sea Power"
    2004 - The Killers - "Hot Fuss"
    2005 - Bloc Party - "Silent Alarm"
    2006 - Scott Walker - "The Drift"
    2007 - Radiohead - "In Rainbows"
    2008 - Portishead - "Third"
    2009 - The Church - "Untitled #23"
    2010 - Jonsi - "Go"

This might be pretty hard to do but I think there are posters here that could do this such as jo mama, Landlord Landry, Deckard, moes, among others.

It is a great album. I mean it beat out "Merriweather Post Pavilion" and that was a damn good album in its own right.

Actually I used Wikipedia and looked up whatever year it was "in music" (example "1973 in music") and it lists all the albums that were released that year.

But if you have some albums you want to name, Freak, I can tell you what year they were released.

If you just want to list the last 5, 10, or 15 years and not go all the way back to when you were born, that's fine with me. I just would like to see what other people thought the album of the year was for certain years.

Oh. That's the only song I know from the Church too, but that's cause of the Lincoln commercial.

I'll help you out with yours.

    1999 Make Yourself
    2001 Morning View
2003 A Crow Left of the Murder...
    2005 Light Grenades

Actually '79 and '91 were the banner years for great albums, IMO (I believe Ten came out in '91 but it might have been '92 - I know that Nevermind did come out in '91).

    I looked up
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_number-one_albums_of_19XX_%28U.S.%29

Based on each of those results, I took the album that had the longest time at #1:

    1982 Asia - Asia
    1983 Thriller - Michael Jackson
1984 Purple Rain - Prince and the Revolution
1985 Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits
1986 Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston
    1987 Whitney - Whitney Houston
    1988 Faith - George Michael
1989 The Raw & The Cooked - Fine Young Cannibals
1990 Please Don't Hurt 'Em - MC Hammer
1991 Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey
1992 Some Gave All - Billy Ray Cyrus
    1993 The Bodyguard Soundtrack
    1994 The Lion King Soundtrack
1995 The Hits - Garth Brooks
1996 Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette
1997 Tragic Kingdom - No Doubt
    1998 The Titanic Soundtrack
    1999 Millennium - Backstreet Boys
    2000 Supernatural - Santana
    2001 Hot Shot - Shaggy
2002 The Eminem Show - Eminem
2003 Get Rich or Die Tryin' - 50 Cent
    2004 Confessions - Usher
    2005 The Massacre - 50 Cent
2006 Tie: Unpredictable - Jamie Foxx, Me and My Gang - Rascal Flatts
2007 Tie: High School Musical 2 Soundtrack, Noel - Josh Groban
2008 Tie: As I Am - Alicia Keys, Sleep Through the Static - Jack Johnson, Tha Carter III - Lil Wayne, Death Magnetic - Metallica
    2009 Fearless - Taylor Swift
2010 - Recovery - Eminem (unless Speak Now by Taylor Swift closes out the rest of the year at #1, and then she'd tie Em)

Conclusion: The general public and I have a vast difference of opinion in most cases.

Don't get me wrong, it's a cool idea, it just seems like a lot of effort to know what all was released in a particular year.
