I get that Mario Williams has been heavily criticized, but there's no denying the man's talent. Clowney is mentioned everywhere on TV and sports websites as being a freak athlete we haven't seen in a long time. Let's look at the numbers:

    Williams:
    6'7" 295 lbs
    40: 4.70
    3 cone: 7.21
    20: 4.37
    Bench: 35 reps
    Vertical: 40.5 in
    Broad Jump: 120 in

    Clowney:
    6'5" 266 lbs
    40: 4.53
    3 cone: 7.27
    20: 4.43
    Bench: 21 reps
    Vertical: 37.5 in
    Broad Jump: 124 in

Considering their sizes, I would say that Williams is by far the greater physical "freak". What is it about Clowney that separates him from Mario?

Sorry if this has been brought up.

If I had to build the perfect DE, no doubt it would be mario Williams. He has the ideal size, speed, athleticism and explosiveness. Physically, he's the total package.

Similar things were said about Mario in the draft. He was just overshadowed by Bush.

No doubt it's Willams. I hope Clowney turns into the better football player.

    Exactly correct.

Clowney is basically the LB version of Mario's "freak" numbers.

Seriously though, how crazy is it for a guy 295 lbs to have a 40 inch vertical? Insane

I agree that if we're talking just athleticism, Williams is the better athlete running a 4.7 while benching 35 and jumping 40 inches is nuts.

But if we're talking just football, Clowney is the better athlete. His quickness, especially off the snap, is more comparable to Dwight Freeney than Williams. He always seems to be a step ahead of his Olineman. He also has insane balance - you'll see him casually hurdle running backs trying to cut block him at least once a game.

I'll take Clowney's athelticism over Williams' any day.

clowney seems much more "fast twitch" than mario...

mario seemed rather sluggish in short bursts.

Mario also has bad COD skills, making lateral pass rush moves almost impossible for him to make. Clowney has the full physical package and is capable of perfecting any pass rush.

They're both monsters. If they were rookies and I had to go on my gut about how I felt, recalling how I felt about Mario back then... I'd take Williams in 43 and Clowney in 34. Mario the guy I'd believe to be a better run stopper.

If Clowney turns into Mario 2.0 I'm still fine with the use of the pick.

C'mon man, we're talking about athleticism. What does Call of Duty have to do with lateral movement???

Clowney's burst off the line is going to get him 10 sacks alone.

Mario wasn't a freak like that.

The same burst off the line that got him 3 sacks in his last season against college O-linemen?

This Williams is a freak also, in fact I have dreams of pairing them and having them mate. Oh what special little little ones that would make. She has also dated Lavare Aringhton, sadly no child was produced. Must continue my gene mutations in basement.
