Cool But, he's not being charged with that. He's being charged with trafficking. Who, in this world, believes he's trafficking?
For the common man 1-5 years. For a multimillionaire NBA player probably a misdemeanor/community service hours at most and more likely charges dropped.
prosecutors overcharge at the beginning to have leverage for plea deals. (he's not going to jail for this.) they don't believe he is "trafficking" in the sense laypeople use the word, but they think he meets the statutory definition of the offense. welcome to criminal law in america folks.
That sucks. Never understand why athletes would have that type of weight on them. An ounce or two of the dankity dank..... yea I could see that being personal use but pounds......
Decades ago they busted Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones guitar player, with enough heroin in Toronto that they charged him with trafficking. He obviously was just a multi-millionaire junkie rock star, but they charged him anyhow. He eventually got off easy though.
Attorney might be able to get the case thrown out. He got pulled over for following a vehicle too closely. Who gets pulled over for that? They were looking for an excuse to pull him over. They knew about the mar1juana.
I don't understand your question. Are we supposed to only make laws apply to non-rich and famous people? EDIT: before you reply I know full well he'll be treated differently.
The question is basically 'do we believe this person committed the crime he's actually charged with?' It's probably more of a rhetorical question. I'm not inferring preferential treatment to rich people actually quite the opposite. I'd bet most people that get charged the same way aren't rich but also aren't drug traffickers. It's an inherent problem with the way the drug laws are written. Montrezl's charge just highlights that.
