New York Lawyers Plead Guilty to Conspiracy in Molotov-Cocktail Case
Plea agreement stems from attack on empty police car after George Floyd’s killing

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-yo...nspiracy-in-molotov-cocktail-case-11654203046

    excerpt:

Two lawyers involved in throwing a Molotov cocktail at a New York City police car during a 2020 protest following the killing of George Floyd pleaded guilty Thursday to a conspiracy charge, under a new agreement with prosecutors that could lead to a shorter prison sentence.

Urooj Rahman and Colinford Mattis faced federal charges after they assembled a chemical-filled glass bottle, which Ms. Rahman tossed into an empty police vehicle during the May 2020 protest in Brooklyn. She fled in a car driven by Mr. Mattis. The incident was recorded on local surveillance cameras. No one was injured.

Ms. Rahman and Mr. Mattis pleaded guilty last year to one count of possessing and making an explosive device, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Under the new agreement, Ms. Rahman and Mr. Mattis withdrew the earlier plea and instead pleaded guilty to conspiring to assemble the Molotov cocktail and damage the New York Police Department patrol car.

The conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of five years, though prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of 18 to 24 months imprisonment. The agreement also requires them to pay more than $30,000 restitution to the city of New York.

The Justice Department and U.S. probation officials each indicated that federal-sentencing guidelines could have led to an excessive sentence, particularly if the lawyers’ conduct was considered an act of terrorism, according to a letter last month from prosecutors to the judge.

Ms. Rahman, a human-rights lawyer, and Mr. Mattis, a one-time associate at Pryor Cashman LLP, both said that they regretted their actions. Pleading guilty to a felony likely will lead to their disbarment, prosecutors said.

There's been some rememberance here in MN with the two year anniversary of the killing of George Floyd and the riots. A lot has been rebuilt and reopened but there is still a lot that hasn't. Very few of the empty lots where buildings that burned down haven't been rebuilt and many businesses that were looted haven't recovered.

Most prominent is the burned out husk of the 3rd Precinct is still there and there are no plans to repair it and reopen it or build another 3rd Precinct.

While Chauvin was convicted in the state trial and pleaded guilty for Federal charges, Keung and Thao are still awaiting trial. Lane has pleaded guilty to Federal charges.

Minneapolis took a major hit with the combination of the pandemic, the riots, and a botched "Defund the Police" effort. While many things are improving in the city there is a long way to go.

Those arson murder attempts are too wild. Esp those chicks that tried to blame black men after they failed to light up a squad car with 4 police inside.

People are dumb and self destructive af

I know the case in the post above was in NY but it goes to a point that I made early in this thread. For all of those rationalizing the riots as that oppressed people will lash out, "riot is the languange of the unheard" much of the violence and looting was carried out by people who weren't traditionally oppressed. Had very little to do with social justice.

That was very obviousm witnessing it first hand.

The Racism is real with those police.

The analysis of police reports, interviews and body camera footage took nearly two years, revealing what investigators said was a "pattern and practice" of racial discrimination.

While African Americans make up 19% of the population of Minneapolis, they represented 54% of all traffic stops between 2017-20, the inquiry found.
Black people accounted for 63% of police use-of-force incidents from 2010-20.

Officers also created fake social media accounts to monitor black people "unrelated to criminal activity, without a public safety objective", said the report.

The 72-page report blames a "paramilitary approach to policing" and a culture that is "ineffective at holding officers accountable for misconduct".
It also charges that officers in the department "consistently use racist, misogynistic, and disrespectful language and are rarely held accountable" for such misconduct.

    Read the article.

    Here's another for ya.

When members of the public sought remedy for perceived abuses and misconduct, they were met with a system in which “complaints are inadequately investigated and officers are not consistently held accountable for misconduct.” As an example, the report cites a troublingly long turnaround time for internal investigations: “Between January 2010 and May 2021, the average time that it took Office of Police Conduct Review and/or Internal Affairs to complete an investigation and for a Police Chief to issue a final disciplinary decision after a police misconduct complaint was filed was over 475 days, and the median time was over 420 days.”

Not sure what you guys are getting at, but hopefully not trying to justify it. The article gave multiple examples of racist discrimination.

I'm trying to get at the fact that I read the article and the article does not have the answer to the question that Astrodome asked, and thus "read the article" is not a good response to the question.

His question had nothing to do with the article, or the racism they found. That's why I told him to read it.

    Bomb Throwers Disbarred

    https://blog.simplejustice.us/2022/11/17/bomb-throwers-disbarred/

    excerpt:

Two lawyers in their early 30s threw a Molotov cocktail into a police car. There were no cops inside, which may have mattered or not, but at least they killed no one when they chose, in their self-indulgent passion, to throw a bomb. They have now pleaded guilty to the crime, so they no longer enjoy the presumption of innocence. And they are no longer lawyers.

New York’s Appellate Division, First Department said Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman qualified for automatic disbarment based on their guilty pleas in June.

Although the court’s order was released Tuesday, it retroactively dated the start of their disbarment to June 2, when Mattis and Rahman admitted in Brooklyn federal court to conspiracy to commit arson and possess an explosive device.

In New York, lawyers are automatically disbarred upon conviction of a felony, without regard to whether the crime related in any way to the practice of law, to the lawyer’s honesty or integrity, or to the lawyer’s treatment of his clients. In the usual course, that a defendant is a lawyer and will, upon conviction, be disbarred, is taken into account in formulating the appropriate sentence. Not only will the lawyer-defendant suffer incarceration, but the loss of three years of his life, the cost of tuition (or student debt) for law school and the loss of his career after he’s completed his sentence. These are punishments other defendants will not suffer and are properly considered in formulating a parsimonious sentence.

That's good news. They should be disbarred for sure. Of course they are also guilty and will face the consequences.
