Texas man flying to London had 75 pounds of pot in luggage at MIA, police say

A Texas man was arrested before he could board a flight to London after 75 pounds of mar1juana was found in his luggage at Miami International Airport, authorities said.

Harrison O'Neill Tiernan, 23, of Austin, was arrested Saturday at MIA on a cannabis trafficking charge, an arrest report said.

Tiernan, who was traveling to London's Heathrow Airport, had checked two suitcases for his British Airways flight. Authorities inspecting the bags discovered 65 vacuum-sealed packages containing a "green leafy" substances, that was later confirmed to be mar1juana, the report said.

Tiernan was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers while trying to board the flight and acknowledged that the two checked bags belonged to him.

The report did not say whether Tiernan's suitcases were targeted, but noted that CBP was conducting inspections at Miami International due to a "high trend of narcotics being smuggled outbound from USA."

In all, Tiernan had 34.01 kilograms, or 74.98 pounds, of mar1juana, the report said. CBP initially notified U.S. Homeland Security, which declined the case because the amount of drugs did not meet "the federal threshold," the report states. They then contacted the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, which became the lead agency for the case.

Tiernan was arrested and booked into jail. He appeared before a judge on Sunday who set his bond at $20,000 and order Tiernan to wear a GPS monitor if he posts bond.

The incident is just the latest of several recent drug trafficking arrests at MIA that includes an arrest last month of a woman from California and of a woman traveling to the Dominican Republic.
