Post scouting reports/videos/thoughts on our 1st overall pick. Better than sifting through the other 2 threads. Personally, I have really soured on Appel, and was the guy I wanted least.
Appel: Means a lot to me. Such a surreal moment for me and my family, knowing I'm going back home. It's an honor. Difference between this year and last year with Mark Appel? Good question. A lot has changed. My mentality, going after it, not proving myself but trusting my abilities. Vindication for you that you made this decision(going back to school) and it worked out? I'm excited for it. I'm excited to see what God has in store for me.
I didn't really care either way. Fine, not blown away. I suppose the board shares the same sentiment, considering how we were all overjoyed at the Correa selection.
appel seemed excited on the phone conversation. im hapy he still, in his own words, considers houston home..
Seems to be paralysis by analysis to me. Appel has been under scrutiny for two years. If he were a hot under the radar prospect like Correa people would be more excited, but he isn't. Assuming the contract isn't an issue I'm happy with this pick. He has all the the tools, great heater and 2 good secondary pitches. Luhnow doesn't buy into hype, the man does his homework. Given all we have seen for two years he still went with Appel, so i'm good.
RoyO ceiling, IMO, I just think he won't live up to that. I hope I'm wrong. If he had these same numbers at a Jr., I'd feel a lot more comfortable.
Assume Appel will start at Quad Cities and then skip Lancaster and head to Corpus around August. He'll probably finish there and then fight for a spot in the big league rotation next year.
