Superior man charged with assaulting boy who was 'disrespecting the national anthem'

A 39-year-old Superior man was jailed this weekend for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old boy he believed, according to one witness, had disrespected the national anthem.

Curt James Brockway was arrested by Mineral County Sheriff's deputies around 11 p.m. Saturday. Montana Department of Justice records show he is registered as a violent offender. Brockway made his initial appearance in Mineral County Justice Court on Monday, and was scheduled to be released on his own recognizance on Tuesday.

Taylor Hennick was at the Mineral County Fair and Rodeo on Saturday, and told the Missoulian she had just stopped at the entrance to the fairgrounds in Superior to pause for the national anthem when she heard a "pop."

"There was a little boy lying on the ground," she said. "He was bleeding out of his ears, seizing on the ground, just not coherent." She said she recognized the boy as a family member's neighbor.

A press release from Mineral County Sheriff Mike Boone stated the boy is 13.

The boy was transported by Superior Ambulance Service for initial medical treatment at a local hospital before he was flown to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Spokane, according to Boone. No further information was immediately available on the boy's condition.

Hennick said the man, who she had by then identified as Brockway, tried justifying the assault as bystanders moved in on him Saturday evening.

"He said (the boy) was disrespecting the national anthem so he had every right to do that," Hennick said.

Montana Department of Corrections records show Brockway, born in 1980, is serving a 10-year probation sentence for an assault with a weapon charge in 2010.

Brockway's arraignment has been set for Aug. 14 at 10 a.m., with District Judge John Larson presiding.

Took me a second to realize Superior is a city in Montana.

At first, I thought maybe Kahn Noonien Singh might have unloaded on some poor kid.

I can't tell if you are joking, but today I saw something on msn.com re: lawyer blaming Trump for assault. Was it this one?

Yeah, I saw this a couple of days ago. **** makes me sick, fractured the poor kid's skull.

Big man is so damn patriotic that he totally forgot about the 1st amendment / freedom of speech. Because what would all of those who died for our freedom under that flag would have wanted? A 13-year-old boy's head smashed in at a county fair of course!

I wonder if big man is also a Christian in addition to being a stout patriot.

No idea how much of this is just his defense counsel advocating but article states his lawyer says man is suffering from traumatic brain injury he received while on active duty years ago.

If he is suffering from a traumatic brain injury that causes him to have no impulse control and he does things like serve probation for assault with a violent weapon and crush a 13 year old child’s face... then he needs to be in prison for the rest of his life... it isn’t worth the risk to society.

Sorry... but pedophiles, rapists and people that have a track record of violent crimes do not ever need to be reintroduced into society. Let them die in prison or an institution. People like that commit numerous crimes and ruin a great deal of lives.

Also why it would be a major mistake to undo the Clinton Crime Bill. It isn’t a coincidence violent crime went down.

folks are missing the obvious point that if the kid was wearing a MAGA hat then he obviously deserved what he had coming to him.
