I'm sure most of you have seen variations of this pic...but I like this one the most... reporting live from outer space, rH
Wow, that really shows just how "wild" the west still is. Look at the difference between the two sides of the country.
And look at South America. Once you get off the coast, it is empty. I thought the Andes ran inland down the western coastline. Why is the rest of it empty?
To quote MAXIM magazine on a similar picture: "Maybe if they're good, we'll let Canada have electricity."
*sigh* I give up. You win. I'll confess....I really am Homer Simpson. Pass the donuts. You want to hear the sad part? I've never really watched the Simpsons. The episodes I have seen were funny, but when the show first aired, the wife and I didn't think it was appropriate for the kids to see, so we never tuned in. I never knew what I was missing till I joined this board. I feel so deprived now....but....I don't have any little "Barts" at my house!
Marge : "But, Homer! You're a nuclear technician." Homer : "Marge! IcksNay on the UclearNay EchnicianTay." Marge : "What did you say?" Homer : "I don't know. I flunked Latin, too."
DOH! Hey RichRocket... it's a composite image.. so it's made up of a bunch of smaller images...and I think (purely speculation) that the intent of NASA or whoever put together the pic was to focus on N. America.... I've seen another pic that's N. & S. America, lit up... really neat stuff... here's another: reporting live from the space within my mind, rH
the highest concentration of people in s. amer live in the rio/sao paulo/buenos aires area, which is off the map. we're mostly seeing the amazon basin in that pic. but we also see the lights from the venezuelan and colombian cities, which tells me s. amer was not totally neglected. related, but potentially boring: incidentally, i read an article in a magazine a few months ago about an observatory in the andes that is among the best in the world, and a tourist destination for astronomy buffs (don't remember exactly where it is, sorry, want to say chile, though) anyway, the town below the observatory that serves the tourists was expanding because of all the new money coming in. unfortunately, the lights from the town began to compromise the effectiveness of the observatory (how's that for irony?). so someone with a brain suggested putting "caps" (picture captain america's shield) on the streetlights in the town, so the light only goes down, not up. problem (mostly) solved.
Why aren't there any dotted lines between the states? And why isn't Kansas pink? Thank you. Thank you. I'll be here all week.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap001127.html Here's a good one. If you go to the site, you can zoom in.
The coolest part of that last one is you can see a delicate track running all the way across the steppe of southern Russia. Also, there are two rather well-lit islands to the east of Madagascar. Extra points to whoever can name those islands.
And I let my kids watch every episode multiple times from birth (well, my older son was almost a year old by the time The Simpsons premiered, but he watched from the show's beginning)and I don't have any Barts running around the house, either.
