So my fiance asked me at the beginning of the Rockets game tonight what was the longest scoreless stretch to begin an NBA game and I tried to do some research and couldn't find it. Anybody know the answer to this?

A bit hazy, but maybe the Magic's blowout against the Cavs could be a candidate?

I don't know the answer but tonight wasn't even close. I've seen about 30 Rockets games just in the last few seasons where it took us longer to score.

Our first point tonight came 1:26 into the game (Scola FT).

Our first FG came at 2:02 (Brooks 3PT).

That wasn't a big deal at all.

There was a game a long time ago when Otis Thorpe was playing on the Kings against Magic's Lakers, and Sacramento went scoreless the entire first quarter. I think that might be it.

there was one game under JVG when they didn't score for a good 3 or 4 minutes to start the game.

remember back then the bench would stand until the first point was scored? the announcers were making fun of how long the bench had to stand. i think it was a nationally televised game.

anyone remember that or know what game it was?

I don't know about a scoreless stretch to begin a game, but the Houston Rockets were the first (?) team to ever be held scoreless in an overtime. This was back in the 80's sometime - I don't remember the details, though.

Why did the bench stop doing that? I think Mutumbo still stands, though I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure you're exaggerating here. I remember seeing a game where a team only scored four points in a quarter and it was mentioned that at the time, that was the lowest scoring quarter ever.

I remember a game against the Kings a long while back where the Rockets were getting absolutely blasted in the first quarter. I could've swore it was something like 15 or 18 to zero to start...maybe someone else has a better idea.

Hey thanks for that...why not just bring out the 35-3 lead by the Buffalo Bills too?

    ;)

You aren't going to find that stat unless you work for the NBA, but I can tell you that the Nuggets scored 3 points against the Spurs a few years back in the 1st quarter.
