She broke both ankles and they put her to sleep on the track.

Yep. That was quick. I never thought about them being prepared to do it so quickly. Obviously, it was inevitable but it's kind of shocking that they made the decision and went through with it in just a few minutes.

It's not like they showed anything. I've been on the computer but I don't thing they've even shown her going down. I mean, she finished the race 2nd and went down sometime after that. The only thing I actually saw was them showing her laying on the dirt and 2 equine ambulances showing up.

Wow, how did I miss that -- I thought she fell way back on the track. I didn't realize that was her in 2nd.

yep, and that is why big brown freaked out a little afterwards.

always fun to watch the derby but the camera work sucked bad.

I saw the footage of the horse going down. They showed it a few minutes after the race. PETA is going to go crazy.

PETA? Really? Isn't it pretty much a given that a horse can't survive after that? I mean, Barbaro only broke one leg and never fully recovered and had to be put down anyway. Breaking 2 ankles is a sure death sentence whether you try to save the horse or not. It's pretty much futile. PETA and be stupid at times and overreact, but I think they understand the concept of a mercy killing to put an animal in excruciating pain out of its misery.

Don't be so sure. We're talking about people who compare chicken processing facilities to Auschwitz and Dachau.

I wouldn't be surprised if they likened this to putting Joe Theismann out of his misery after the Giants snapped his leg.

Wow...I thought about starting a Kentucky Derby thread last week, but have never gotten much response....2 pages in on this one!! :)

Big Brown's win was impressive as hell...because he ran a really long track. He ran on the outside for virtually the entire race, and still managed to win going away. I'm thinking he'll win the Preakness...and we'll see what happens at Belmont. But we MAY be looking at a legit TC threat.

Of course, even if he pulls this out, he doesn't touch Smarty Jones, the greatest horse to ever live. ;)

    And here it is...

PETA wants Eight Belles jockey suspended after filly's death

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is seeking the suspension of Eight Belles' jockey after the filly had to be euthanized following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Gabriel Saez was riding Eight Belles when she broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter of a mile past the wire. She was euthanized on the track.

PETA faxed a letter Sunday to Kentucky's racing authority claiming the filly was "doubtlessly injured before the finish" and asked that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles' death is investigated.

"What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?" PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. "If he didn't then we can probably blame the fact that they're allowed to whip the horses mercilessly."

Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones said the filly was clearly happy when she crossed the finish line.

"I don't know how in the heck they can even come close to saying that," Jones told The Associated Press on Sunday. "She has her ears up, clearly galloping out."

Guillermo said if Saez is found at fault, the group wants the second-place prize of $400,000 won by Eight Belles to be revoked.

Saez, a 20-year-old Panama native, was riding in his first Kentucky Derby. He frequently rides for Jones.

A call to the jockeys' room at Delaware Park, where Saez raced on Sunday, went unanswered.

Eight Belles, the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby, appeared fine until collapsing while galloping out after the finish.

The letter to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority also sought a ban on whipping, limits on races and the age of racehorses, and a move to softer, artificial surfaces for all courses.

    called it.

    PETA is getting so predictable.

Everyone should watch the expose that Penn and Teller did on PETA, i was laughing my ass off at the bulk of their stupidity.

I saw an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher where PeTA claimed that global warming was being caused by cow farts. That we cut down trees for pastures and breed cattle for meat consumption and that too many cows release too much methane which does more harm to our environment that vehicle and factory emissions.

I said I didn't think PeTA would object to putting down the horse. But I'm not surprised that they came out against the jockey. I'm mildly surprised the article doesn't mention them calling for the abolition of the sport which I assume they would be in favor of.

Anyway, here's the Penn & Teller PeTA episode. NSFW: Language.
