I wouldn't mind Verlander being a postseason closer... and just ride 3 starters of Greinke, McCullers, and Urquidy.

Looks like he had too much time off season. hope he didnt tear a muscle, and hope this isnt an on going nagging injury for the season.

Part of the disappointment, not JV's fault, is all the buildup about how the time off would be great for him (and others). A fresher arm come playoff time they said. How he changed his delivery so he can pitch into his 40's. Only to instead, effectively having him miss most of the regular season and no clue to his condition come playoff time.

I am going to have to make a better effort to ignore all the hype when it comes to all these off season forecasts about players and all the awesomeness they will be when I get to see them play again.

[Player X] has made a change, is in the best shape of his life, is feeling the greatest he's ever felt and is ready for a big season ahead! ;)

Sounds like he’s just doubling down on his initial speculation.

I would guess that Verlander is indeed out for the season. But if Verlander is publicly saying he is not out yet then that is the report I’d run with.

    Agreed.

And extremely odd that in his logic he's using the similar presentation of LMJ... when LMJ did come back that year to pitch in relief (albeit, painfully).

Its highly likely there is some sort of UCL tear. I doubt they know the extent without an MRI. The extent will be what they use to determine his chances of pitching viably this season.

With the season being as short as it is, any significant arm injury will mean missing the entire season. These Chronicle hacks are just playing probability so that when it ends up getting confirmed they can say "See?! We were right!" Well no s*** it's an easy prediction to make.

I have really come to hate all media, sports and news.

Isn't part of what media is suppose to do is to take facts and explain the likely ramifications to people that read their stuff? Only big thing they are missing is the word "likely" a few times, but then everyone does that.

Not by a long shot. Next we will hear people pine over Dale Robertson.

As for what Verlander’s absence means for the Astros the rest of the season, the loss has already had ramifications for their playoff and World Series odds. Entering Sunday’s game, the Astros had a 95.5% chance of making the playoffs and 13.7% odds of winning the World Series. After their loss to Mariners, their playoff odds dropped three percentage points, to 92.5%, and their chances of winning the World Series took a significant dip down to 11.7%. While some of the change could be attributed to their loss on Sunday, the Dodgers recently put Clayton Kershaw on the IL and also lost Sunday and only saw their playoff odds fall by half as much; their World Series odds were unchanged.

Entering the season, Verlander was projected as the fifth-best pitcher in baseball, with 1.7 WAR. So far, we’ve only removed about half of that value from our rest-of-season projections. The Astros still have a good staff, currently ranked seventh in our Depth Charts with the following playing time projections:

    Astros Starting Pitching Projections
    Name IP ERA FIP WAR
    Zack Greinke 71 4.05 4.16 1.1
    Lance McCullers Jr. 56 3.85 3.84 1.1
    Joshua James 50 4.03 4.09 0.9
    Framber Valdez 46 4.00 4.28 0.7
    Jose Urquidy 36 4.41 4.56 0.5
    Justin Verlander 29 3.32 3.43 0.7
    Forrest Whitley 23 5.00 5.20 0.1
    Austin Pruitt 17 4.81 4.73 0.2
    Cristian Javier 7 4.90 5.16 0
    Brandon Bailey 3 5.20 5.22 0
    Total 337 4.11 4.22 5.3

With Urquidy and Verlander’s playing time very much in doubt, it wouldn’t take much more bad news for the Astros’ rotation to tumble into the middle or even the bottom half of the league. A lot could ride on Whitley’s development. His projection is weak due to his struggles a year ago. If the step forward he seemed to take in the spring and summer holds, he could keep Houston among the 10 best rotations in baseball. If he struggles, the rotation looks a lot less solid and even more full of question marks. The Astros still have the best set of position players in the game and should be able to overcome a middling pitching staff, but without Verlander, they no longer looks quite like the world-beaters they did on Opening Day. And if he doesn’t come back strong, repeating as American League champs could prove very difficult.

Our pitching is strong enough to hold the fort. And the lineup is strong enough to support them while out. Playoffs guaranteed. It's just a question of how deep can we go if Verlanders is shut down.

Normally , I would agree. But your opinion is based on having the rest of the staff available until JV can return and that is far from a given.

My guess is JV will require TJ surgery and miss his last two seasons with the Astros. He'll take a low paying 1 year deal with Detroit in 2022 to close out his career there.

    :D

Framber Valdez said losing Verlander is like a table losing one its legs and the table needs some more support now it has three legs.

That is true of all 29 other teams though, too.
